Match Trivia
This arrangement came off on the Rangers ground at Kinning Park, and ended in a draw without any scoring on either side. The afternoon although all but dry, was misty and disagreeable for spectators and player alike, and the full time for playing off the contest had to be curtailed to the extent of a quarter an hour. Neither club were represented by their full strength, but the match was nevertheless a good one, and so well fought that not a single point could be made. The backs play however, were the feature of the play, and considering the sloppy ground, was remarkably good. The home players kicked off after losing the toss, and at once made a dash on the Thistle territory – Lawrie and Buchanan leading the way. Hendry, however came to the rescuer with a brilliant bit of tackling, and took the ball out of danger. Some even play followed the ball being often kicked over the touchline by the backs on both sides. The Rangers afterwards had a free kick near the Thistle lines, but the ball was soon got out of danger, and Suter had a fast run down to the Rangers goal, where the rest of the forwards following up formed a scrimmage. The strangers looked like having the advantage, but McIntyre with one of his plucky rushes came to the resume and sent the leather clear. After this the Rangers pressed their men very hard and on several occasions their forwards were within easy distance of scooting, but indifferent shooting and manoeuvring at the last minute lost their many fine chances. In turn the Partickonians attacked the Rangers lines, and Chalmers had to display his ability as a goalkeeper, and on two occasions shy the ball away. Near the close of the first round however the Rangers gave their guest a hot time of if with corner-flag kicks and shies at goal; but Duff and the backs proved themselves good assets in defence, and no scoring occurred up till halftime. In the second round the strangers followed up the kick off with great vigour and Chalmers was early called upon to save his charge by throwing the ball away. The Thistle kept pegging away for some time, but the Rangers backs were equally effective in clearing their lines from all attacks, and eventually sent their opponents down to look after their own affairs at the others goals which was soon as closely besieged, and even more so than that of their opponents. After this the Rangers had decidedly the best of it for a long time, and had hard lines indeed in not scoring. Again and again they pressed the Thistle exceedingly hard, and the ball was within an ace of going through, but till the whistle sounded not a single point was gained, and the game finished up a draw. For some time during the close of the match the fog obscured the field, and the spectators could only discern a faint outline of the area, and hear the respective players assisting one another as to the position of the ball.
