Match Trivia

The return match between these two crack Association clubs took place on the ground of the former, Kinning Park and after an exciting game ended in a tie, each team scoring two goals. The strangers showed themselves to be about the finest club that has come to Scotland since the Association has started – the run made in the last minutes by the Nottingham captain which carried a goal being perhaps the smartest bit if work witnessed on the field for many a day. The first half was played under Scotch and the second under England rules. The Rangers won the toss for choice of ends and as the wind was blowing strongly at the time it was naturally expected that their captain would take advantage of it, but relying on the power of endurance possessed by his team, he decided to defend the lower goal for the first half and a hard job the Rangers made of it. The Forest good use of the kick off and got well down on the Rangers lines till they were cleared by Drinnan, and after hard tackling and smart kicking by the advanced guard of both teams, the Rangers forwards by smart passing to one another managed to get the ball fairly in front of the Forest goal, where a scrimmage ended in the ball passing the left goal post. The kick out was followed by a fine run on the part of Earp and Hill who got down so close to the Rangers goal that T Vallance in order to save his side sent the ball spinning over his own lines. Earp had the corner flag kick and before the goal was completely cleared Gillespie had to throw the ball away. Closing well in the Rangers cleared their goal in splendid style and Steel and Struthers followed by McNeil had a smart run away up the field with the wind blowing a ‘perfect’ hurricane in their faces; but Struthers missed a fine chance by sending the ball outside the post. The play for a time was now in the strangers ground but by and by they got down again on the Scotch goal and pressed the backs so hard that in making a ‘header’ a few yards from the post the ball turned the wrong away from Vallance and went clean over Gillespie’s head through goal. This gave the Nottingham men the first goal after twenty-five minutes play. As soon as the game was again started the ball was taken from goal to goal with amazing rapidity and both keepers had to kick and hand out; but the home team had three corner flag kicks just as half time was announced. The Rangers had now the wind in their favour but in the first three or four minutes after the kick off their goal had a narrow shave, the ball being within a few feet of the post when it was lifted and thrown away by Gillespie. The Rangers however soon retaliated coming down on the English goal with great dash. Again and again the ball was put in front and behind the lines but they could not get it through. Getting into a good position however behind his forwards T Vallance centred the ball well down and in a determined scrimmage McNeil placed it between the Notts posts. The two teams were now equal and as soon the ball again left midfield the Rangers were busy as the English goal at which they had no fewer then five-corner flag kicks in succession. In a little however the game was more open and the strangers had in turn a scrimmage at the Rangers goal. Time was now wearing on but what remained of the game was the best. Hard work by the whole of the home team and a good placed ball by the younger Vallance caused another warm scrimmage in front of the Notts goal which was taken for the second time after a hard struggle, Hill being credited with the final touch. No time was lost in again facing each other in the centre and after the ball had been kept well in Notts territory, a run was started by Hill and continued in brilliant form by Widdowson who made his way from the centre of the field with the ball at his toe and never stopped till he ran it clear through the Rangers goal. Time was announced shortly after this grand bit of play each side scoring two goals. Before leaving the field the Rangers gave three cheers to their opponents and this was immediately followed by a like compliment on the part of the strangers. Despite the heavy rain there was a very good turnout of spectators. In the evening the Nottingham players were entertained at dinner by their opponents in the Athole Arms Hotel Dundas Street. Mr RB Kerr president of the Rangers was chairman and Mr Widdowson captain of the Nottingham Forrest discharged the duties of croupier
