Match Trivia

Many a true word, say the old saw, is often spoken in jest, and never was the truth of the saying so well illustrated as at Ibrox Park, Glasgow yesterday, when the Rangers met Greenock Morton in a match for the benefit of the boilermakers on strike. Before the game started, one of the Rangers officials, in reply to a Greenock gentleman who criticised the placing of a full back like RG Campbell at centre-forward, hazarded the prophecy, in a jesting way, that the new pivot would score six goals. As it happened he was wrong, the popular back scored seven. The first and the third goals were second by Campbell from penalties; the second was from a faultless cross by Law; the fourth, fifth and sixth were got by neat pieces of individual work; while the last was headed from a corner-kick taken by dickie a second before the final while sounded. Both teams showed five changes from the eleven which represented them on Saturday, Hamilton, Hendry, Kivlichen, Taylor, and Galt appearing for the Rangers, and Harvie, Nugent, Pollock, McGuinness and Lindsay coming into the ranks of Morton. As for the game, Morton were from the first hopelessly outclassed, a fact that occasioned surprise when it was recollected that the regular Greenock halves were playing Gallacher, Rae and McIntosh could do nothing to stop the clever, dainty movements of the Rangers quintette, and McIntosh in particular was bewildered by Dickie, the diminutive ‘Light Blue’, simply waltzing round the big half. In the respect that the Greenock forwards found Taylor and Gray in their most clever mood, they were unfortunate. These two, along with Hamilton, who made a creditable appearance, checked every move almost before it was started, and though Currie, with commendable perseverance, at times got past Taylor, he was never so successful with Craig, the result being Newbigging never got a shot the whole time worthy of the name. Their best forward, however, was Dart. Among the backs Craig and Hendry were very happy, but Stewart and Nugent were erratic. Stewart even missed a penalty, granted against Craig for an offence which was purely accidental, the ball glancing off his foot on to his arm. Harvie was a bit raw in goal at the start, but he improved greatly in the second half, and saved some stinging shots. The gate was like the weather, wretched
