Match Trivia

The match between those teams at Ibrox Park, Govan was witnessed by about 6000 spectators. Unfortunately the weather was rather showery, the ground suffering from this cause. Previous to the start and at the intervals the boys pipe band from Dr Guthrie’s Industrial Institution Edinburgh performed several selections. The Rangers lost the toss and kicked off. For Several minutes play was of a give and take nature. The Rangers were first to show up, a shot by McCreadie being smartly saved by Ross. After a run by Wylie on the Liverpool right, the Rangers returned to the attack, and Kerr sent in a shot from which the referee awarded a goal. The ball however looked as if it went a foot on the wrong side of the post. The Liverpool now played for all there worth. They gave the Rangers defence a warm time of it, but could not equalise. At last they obtained a free kick twenty yards from goal. The ball was timely placed by Hannah, and McVean who was lying handy equalised with a low shot. The Rangers again took up the play, and by some clever passing they again got down on Ross, and H McCreadie headed through a second point for the home team. A third followed, Kerr again giving the ball the finishing touch, while Ross was on the ground. Just before the whistle sounded A McCreadie at half initiated a run. He passed all opposition and gave the ball to his brother Hugh, who scored the fourth goal. Halftime result – Rangers 4 goals: Liverpool 1 goal.On resuming, the Liverpool came away with a rush, Wylie and Cameron being prominent. They were soon repulsed by the Rangers back division. Taking up the running, the home team piled Ross with several hot shots. He fisted and cleared in grand style, but at last Martin beat him with a long shot, thus registering the fifth goal for the Rangers. It was now all over with the visitors. Their combination went to pieces, and but for the able defence of Hannah, McLean and Ross they would have lost much heavier than they did. Kerr put on the sixth goal for the Rangers with one of the prettiest shots of the day. Play was all in front of the stranger’s goal, but no further scoring took place. For the Rangers, Haddow in goal had little to do, Gow Drummond being quite able to cope with whatever got past their halves. A McCreadie was the best of the halves, but he was not much ahead of either Marshall or Mitchell. All the forwards were in the mood. Kerr’s shooting was very fine, and Martin played a fine game in the centre. The Liverpool were greatly behind their opponents all round. Ross, Hannah, McBride and Wylie were the pick of the lot. There was a lack of combination among the whole team although individually they played well. Final Result – Rangers 6 goals: Liverpool 1 goal
