Match Trivia
The Rangers embarked upon one of the most exacting of their League matches from home for, though the Leith Athletic have a poor record in their League engagements, Bank Park is a factor which cannot be ignored between these clubs aspiring to League honours. In the first meeting between these clubs this season the Rangers won by 3 goals to 2, and its is noticeable that in the three defeats the Athletic have sustained from home, their opponents majority over the three matches was an exceedingly narrow one of three goals. On Saturday the weather was dull and threatening, and towards the finish a heavy shower fell. About five thousand spectators were present. The Rangers kicked off, and a run up the right was stopped by McQueen. The Athletic forwards got away, but Mitchell stopped their career, and the Rangers, who put on some pressure, were again sent back, but once more they returned and after some hot work H McCreadie scored. The play that ensured was on the Rangers ground, and of an open nature, though Haddow was kept on the alert, and when taxed was equal to the occasion. A couple of fouls near the Rangers goal gave the Athletic an opportunity, but they failed to take advantage of the chances offered. The Rangers after their sturdy defence cleared their lines, and the forwards breaking away dashed down the field. McCreadie again scored. After the kick-out a long spell of open play followed. At length the Athletic got well in on the Rangers ground, and a corner fell to them. Jack, taking the kick, placed the ball in capital style, G Anderson scoring the first goal for the home team. Some good play was witnessed, and nice points were shown by both sides, though the Athletic did most of the pressing, and more than once might have scored had it not been for laxness in getting the ball away. In exceedingly pretty style the Rangers forwards got down the field, but W Anderson stopped their career, and once again Haddow and his colleagues had a spell of hard work. A warm feeling now began to manifest itself, but as lay proceeded this wore off. The Rangers forwards with fine passing got to the Athletic goal, but McCreadie sent the ball past. The Athletic once more made a raid but the Rangers maintained their fine defence, and at halftime the score was – Rangers 2 goals; Leith Athletic 1 goal. After crossing over the first event was a determined raid by the Rangers, and the capital defence by Cox, who more than once saved his charge in a brilliant manner. All their efforts however ended in a corner, and for a time play was at midfield. The Rangers forwards were now showing fine form. The Athletic back division had some trouble to got rid of their opponents. This they succeeded in doing, and got to the other end, but the ball was sent over the bar. The pressure was kept up, but a foul by McQueen gave the Rangers relief, and they went to the other end, where along shot by Drummond was disposed by Cox. The play that followed was more open, long shooting being the order of the day. For a long time nothing of special interest occurred. The Athletic could not break through the Rangers defence. Several times they looked like scoring, but Haddow assisted by Gow and Drummond, withstood all advances. With fully ten minutes to go and the score unaltered interest ran high. A foul against the Athletic was neatly stopped, and till the finish both teams worked hard. No further scoring took place, and the game resulted – Rangers 2 goals; Leith Athletic 1.
