Match Trivia

The second meeting between these teams this season took place at Ibrox Park, Govan. The weather before the start was quite wintry, which no doubt kept down the attendance. Both clubs were fully representative. Fifteen minutes late McBain set the ball in motion, the Rangers having lost the toss. For several minutes play was confined to midfield, but gradually the Rangers drew away. They pressed severely, sending in several grand shots. Burnside however saved in grand style. Ultimately a shot from A McCreadie was placed in his hands, H Burnside fisted out, but McBain was lying handy, and getting the ball on his breast that player rushed it through, thus scoring the first goal for the Rangers. Assailed at this reverse the Athletic put o a spurt and got within the Rangers territory. They made numerous efforts to equalise, but all were stopped by the able defence of the Rangers back division. Each team obtained a corner, but nothing came of them, ultimately the Athletics had a chance, and McLeod shot from the corner, Dunbar in trying to save, tipped the ball through his own goal, thus equalising the game. The Rangers retaliated, and Barker, McPherson and Kerr each tried to score, but Burnside was on the alert, and cleverly turned the leather aside. Again the Athletic pressed, and Haddow was forced to concede a corner. H McQueen, who took the kick, placed the ball well, and Blessington headed it through, thus gaining the second goal for the Athletic. The Rangers tried hard to make up the leeway, but they could not find an opening, ere the whistle sounded. Halftime result – Leith Athletic 2 goals: Rangers 1 goal. On resuming it soon be came evident the Rangers meat business. They at once put on the pressure, but 0 minutes had gone before McPherson sent in a lovely shot home, the other forwards rushing Burnside an the ball through, thus equalising the game. The play of the Rangers improved after this success, but they were late in getting up, and consequently many chances were thrown away. Time after time it seemed as if they must score, but someone leg always got in the way of the ball. Just before the close A McCreadie with along swift shot, put on a third point for the Rangers. This was all the scoring. Final result Rangers 3 goals: Leith Athletic 2 goals.
