Match Trivia
The meeting at Dumbarton of last seasons joint champions excited considerable interest, but the gate was not nearly so large as expected. The weather was splendid. The Dumbarton veteran, Duncan Stewart, reappeared at back, and was heartily cheered as he stepped on to the field. The official referee (Mr Watson, Dundee) did not turn up, and the teams agreed upon Mr JT Babtie of Dumbarton. Boyle intercepted Law initial kick, and Bell gave Dunbar a hot one to kick out. Haddow then saved very cleverly, and the Rangers pulling themselves up a bit carried play to the other end. An exciting scrimmage took place in front of the home goal, but luckily for Dumbarton the ball founds its way round the post. McLeod kicked out another shot, but the ball struck Stewart and came in again. Miller happened to be lying handy, however and with a powerful kick he showed the Light Blues the right about. The Rangers were at this point showing by far the better tactics, and it seemed every minute as if the home backs would be beat. A break away by the Dumbarton forwards ended in Haddow clearing a fine shot from Miller, McLeod had then to exert himself, but the international man was in his best mood, and punted and kicked grandly. A free kick to Dumbarton a short distance form the Rangers goal was taken by Boyle, who placed well. The ball tipped one or two of the players and rolled through making the first point for Dumbarton. Till halftime play was fairly even, both goalkeepers being in turn called upon. On resuming the home team played with more spirit, and the Rangers goal was at once subjected to severe pressure. In five minutes it fell to a neat overhead shot from Taylor. The visitors were now having the worst of it, and although they did manage to get near McLeod, it was only for a moment. The scene of operation was quickly shifted to the other end, and while Haddow foolishly debated some point with young Taylor, Boyle captured his goal with a long shot. Haddow was slightly hurt, but he soon recovered. Bell had he ball through again, but he was justly given offside. The Rangers played up a little better, and McPherson managed to get clear away, and easily beat McLeod. This only spurred Dumbarton to greater efforts, and after a repeated attempts Bell scored the fourth point with a brilliant shot. Rangers followed up the kick-of, but the home backs were playing a safe game, Boyle being very prominent. Haddow had to save two or three dangerous shots, but nothing further happened, and the Rangers retired defeated by 4 goals to 1
Rangers appealed to the League that the official referee had not turn up, the appeal was upheld and the match ordered to be replayed
