Match Trivia

This to be proper, should have been the Rangers’ grand conclusion, because the match made the championship secure, and the crowd vented their delight in a great cheer as the players trooped off the field. Rangers played as champions should – they were immensely powerful in defence, pliable and resourceful at half-back, and almost dazzling in attack. So-called veterans like Cunningham and Morton were like frisky young colts just settling out on a new season instead of ending one. This, in fact was the amazing feature of the whole Rangers’ team – fill of life and a vivacity that could only have been put into them by their Cup triumph. It was an easy win, for Kilmarnock’s half-backs could not hold the Ibrox attack, although, for a period of the second half, the entire Rugby Park side showed up well; this was round about the period when Harry Cunningham surprised Gray in a tackle and scored smartly. By that time, however, the points were in the grip of Rangers; their three goals in the first half put the issue beyond doubt. Fleming opened the scoring after 11 minutes, Morton making it easy for him with a low pass after he had danced round the Kilmarnock defence. Cunningham shot the second goal after Clemie had punched out a Morton lob, and the third goal was also Cunningham’s – a 25-yarder. Fleming helped himself to the fourth goal, then came one for Kilmarnock, whole two minutes from the end McPhail and Morton bewildered the visitors’ defence and Fleming shot home from Morton’s pass. Rangers played as a team, and I could not see a defect anywhere. The early goals took the heart out of Kilmarnock, and I am certain they did not do themselves justice. I could, however, see cleverness among the inside forwards, only they put too great a strain on themselves. Harry Cunningham had no luck with his shot that hit the bar before Rangers had scored. Smith worked very hard to get the line going, but all should have shown greater snap. The defence had a gruelling time, and possibly were glad when it was over
