Rangers got just a little more than they bargained for on Newtown Park yesterday. Doomed Boness set about the champions and Cup-holders with a zest that was most refreshing and came very near to sending the all-conquering Ibrox brigade home pointless. With a telling breeze behind them in the first half, Boness had the better of the argument, and at the interval held a single goal lead. Turned round, I expected to see Rangers wipe out this deficit without undue delay, but it was some considerable time ere the Light Blues got through for their equalising point. As a matter of fact, only ten minutes or so remained when Cunningham nullified Oswalds first half goal. And there was more than a touch of luck about Andys scoring effort from twenty-five yards. Simpson would have stopped it, I am sure, but for the intervention of Hume, who in an attempt to kick clear deflected the ball in at the goalkeepers left-hand post. Rangers were a particularly ineffective company before the interval. The wind against them, coupled with the narrowness of the playing pitch and a light ball, upset them completely, and rarely did they prove dangerous. Indeed, Simpsons only serious concern this half was the stopping of a twenty-five-yard shot from Muirhead in the twentieth minute. Boness on the other hand, were always dangerous, and previous to and following Oswalds goal, Tom Hamilton was kept constantly in the hop by the nippy home forward quintette. Gray was not altogether blameless for the loss of this goal after twenty-five minutes. The Aberdonian left Oswald unattended near goal, and when Lynas slipped away on the opposite wing and sent across, Bertie had the simplest of tasks in scoring.
