Match Trivia
This event came off on the ground of the Rangers at Kinning Park heavy rain falling all the time the game lasted. At first the Hibernians looked very formidable but they were eventually overmatched by five goals to one, tow of the scores being made against a strong wind in splendid style. Although beaten the strangers showed capital ability. The Edinburgh club won the toss for choice of ends and played with a strong gusty wind in their favour during they first round. Darting off with a smart pace as soon as the leather was returned by T Vallance, the Hibernian forwards were close upon the Rangers goal secured the first corner flag kick of the contest after causing Gillespie to use his hands twice. The Rangers did not play so well together at the outset but they gradually improved and after fine run started far down the field in Hibernian territory by Steel. The ball was cleverly piloted past the backs by Pringle and sent under goal in about a quarter of an hour. The teams then began anew and after some rattling good kicking and tackling by the Rangers captain the play was pretty even for a time, but eventually a smart piece of passing by Lee and Rourke enabled the whole team to close round the Rangers goal and out of an exciting scrimmage Whellgan kicked a goal. Both teams were now on terms of equality. The Rangers made an appeal for ‘off side’ but it was not sustained. Before the round ended however the Rangers came up the field with the wind blowing in their teeth and scored a second goal – the ball going under from the foot of Pringle after bounding off the bar. The Edinburgh team in turn appealed for ‘off side’ but it was dismissed by the referee. In the second half the latter portion of which was played in semi darkness the Hibernian showed up wonderfully against the wind, but the Rangers were too much for them and scored other three goals after some dashing play by the forwards. The first was got from a smart shot on the part of McIntyre the ball the ball slipping out of the goalkeeper hands and under; second by Struthers after a pretty piece of play and the third out of a scrimmage which succeeded a free kick well down on the Hibernian lines. Both goalkeeper showed very good judgment particularly Gillespie, whose hands seem to have lost none of their cunning. Indeed some of the shots he saved were wonderful in their way. T Vallance was at his best and despite the fact that the heavy rain caused the ground to be slippery, the Rangers forwards play was capital. For the strangers who were unlucky at times in not scoring when in front of goal, the two backs and Quin showed fine ability and tackled cleverly while Lee, Rourke and Flynn excelled amongst the forwards
