The Rangers strove hard to equalise, but their efforts were fruitless. McCreadie put in some clever runs, and from one of those he passed to McPherson, who nearly beat Fairbairn, who had to throw himself on the ground to get the ball away. From a combined run it looked as if the Hearts would increase their score, but Hodge interfered and spoiled the chance. With the ball in midfield the whistle sounded. Halftime result – Heart of Midlothian 1 goal: Rangers 0. The Hearts occasionally broke away, but they were seldom dangerous. Several corners fell to each of the teams, but all were fruitless.
