Match Trivia

Played at Ibrox Park, Govan before 2000 spectators. The weather was wretched, rain falling heavily, which made the ground very sloppy after the recent frost. Having lost the toss the Rangers kicked off against the wind. The preliminary stages of the game were in favour of the Saints, but they could not find an opening. When ten minutes had gone the Rangers came away with a rush, and Blyth scored their first goal with a fine long shot, McGowan looking after the goalkeeper. The Saints retaliated, and looked like scoring, but they were unable to break down the Rangers defence. Ultimately, Sutherland and McDonald got away with a clear field, and passing to Clark, that player beat Haddow, thus equalising the game. Even play followed, each goal being assailed in turn. McGowan, the new forward was laying a good game for the Rangers. With the ball in midfield the whistle sounded. Halftime result – Rangers 1 goal: St Bernard 1 goal. After a short interval the game was resumed with vigour. After the Saints had a short look in the Rangers put on the pressure, and Kerr scored their second goal, the ball spinning through off Philip’s leg. Nettled at this reverse, the Saints strove hard to improve their position, Guthrie, Clark and Stuart being prominent. They could not find an opening, however. The Rangers again took up the running and McPherson scored their third goal after a splendid run. Immediately after McDonald missed an easy chance to score for the Saints. The Rangers were now masters of the field. McBain cleverly put on their fourth goal. Five minutes later the Rangers obtained a fifth point from a corner kick. From this till the close the Rangers pressed, but no further scoring was done. McPherson was in better form on Saturday than he has been since the season opened. McGowan and McCreadie also played well for the Rangers. Baillie, Guthrie, Clark and Stuart were the best of the Saints. Final result – Rangers 5 goals: St Bernards 1 goal.
