Match Trivia
Considerable interest was taken in this event, which came off at Ibrox Park, Govan before 4000 spectators. Losing the toss the Hearts kicked off towards the pavilion end of the field with the breeze at their backs. For the first few minutes the strangers kept the Rangers defence busy, but gradually the ‘Light Blues’ drew away, and after 20 minutes play Kerr tried a shot which Adams in endeavouring to head out, sent the ball through his own goal. Immediately after, the Hearts equalised, Begbie doing the needful. A second goal for the Eastern men followed shortly after, a splendid long shot by Taylor, on the right, going sailing through after being missed by Gow. Halftime sounded with the score – Heart of Midlothian 2 goals: Rangers 1 goal. Aided by the wind in the second half, it was not long ere the Rangers made their presence felt. It took a long time, however for them to equalise. At last H McCreadie by a long shot managed it. From this till the call of time the Rangers had all the play except for an occasional run by the Hearts forwards. They were held well in check, however by the Ibrox defence. Other three goals fell to the Rangers Kerr putting on two and McPherson one. The play considering that it is so early in the season was fast and the Rangers especially made a good show. Final result – Rangers 5 goals: Heart of Midlothian 2 goals
