Match Trivia
Played at Ibrox Park, before about 20,000 spectators. Rangers lost the toss, and kicked off against a strong wind. At the start the Hearts played up well, but the Rangers defence was very strong, and kept them well in check. Gibson opened the score after three minutes play, and thereafter the home team had pretty well the hold of their opponents, Neil scoring from a penalty against McCartney. Play became very rough, and the referee had to caution Begbie, who was paying too much attention to the man, and the Hearts play suffered in consequence. The visitors worked hard to reduce the lead, and by splendid passing they were frequently within shooting range, but finished badly. The Rangers forwards ably backed by the halves, again took the game in hand, and Hamilton scored a third goal, Gibson following shortly after with a fourth. Halftime result – Rangers 4: Hearts 0. The second half was not long in progress ere Hogg was ordered off the field for kicking an opponent, but this had only the effect of increasing the rest of the players, and not long after Begbie was sent to the pavilion for a similarly offence. As McPherson was to blame also in this case, the Hearts showed signs of being disinclined to resume lay, and left the field, but wee ultimately prevailed upon to return. The game to the close was pretty much of a farce, as the Rangers evidently had no desire to add further to their score. The nine men on the Hearts side worked very hard, and five minutes from the close Buick scored. Result – Rangers 4 goals: Hearts 1 goal. Both Hogg and Begbie were sent-off
