Match Trivia
Played at Ibrox Park, before a very meagre attendance of spectators. The Dumbarton team had been considerably drawn upon for the intercounty and international matches, but as will be seen from the list of players, the absentees were adequately replaced. The Rangers team was also strong, and it will be noticed that the club reverted to the old style – that of playing six forwards. McKenzie however was expected to work in the halfback division if necessary. The Rangers kicked off, and the first minute or two were devoted to throw-ins, after which the Dumbarton had a try. Play was ten confined to midfield for a short time, but gradually approached the Rangers goal, where Latta and Henderson made a manoeuvre, which was all but successful. An opportune free kick came to the aid of the home team just when the Dumbarton were pressing them rather hard. The visitors then had a similar advantage, but the immediate result of it was to bring the play dangerously near the Dumbarton goal, where Wilson had to kick out. The next feature was a corner in favour of the visitors, but it was badly placed. The charge in the front rank of the Rangers did not at first seem to be much of an improvement, as the five Dumbarton forwards were quite able to cope with them, but by and by their strength began to tell, with the result that the play was pretty much confined to the visitors half on the field. The Dumbarton defence however was strong and the Rangers seldom got a chance of shooting, while on the other hand when the visitors managed to break through, which was not very often, they had a comparatively weak defence to cope with. About ten minutes from the end of the first portion of the game a foul took place in favour of the Ranger, which was entrusted to Brand, who placed the ball well, and it was got between the uprights in a scrimmage. A few minutes later the Dumbarton found themselves in the vicinity of the Rangers goal, and Nicol let through a very soft one, a low shot from Hartley; and a minute or two later a long shot by the same player made a second point for the Dumbarton, who were one goal ahead at halftime. A little more spirit was infused into the second half of the game, and for a long time the Rangers kept their opponenets pretty closely hemmed in: but they never became really dangerous the back division of the Dumbarton being apparently impassable, while the combination of the Rangers forwards at no time during the game very brilliant, was frequently painfully deficient. By and by matters were reversed, and several times the Rangers goal was in great danger, but they always managed to save, and the result at the end remained – Dumbarton 2 goals, Rangers 1 goal
