Believe me; Rangers got a fright of their lives. Playing football of their own exclusive brand, they were three goals up. Smith, Gillick and Marshall counted in a three-minute spasm. Then they eased up. Almost fatal! Dumbarton were floored, but not out not by a long shot. Williams goal gave them just the wee spot of encouragement required. It opened the way to one of the most exciting second halves Ive seen for long enough. These wee forwards led by the slightly-built but big-hearted Williams, knocked back every piece of defensive armour Rangers could shove up. Jeffrey galloped in to score the best goal of the match. Score, 3-2 and Dumbarton still teaching Rangers a lesson in fighting qualities. But to the anti-climax; Bolt made a mess of a clearance, Shields brushed aside all opposition and shot past Dawson for the vital equaliser. A turn-up with a vengeance! And the battle was on the point of swinging against Rangers when Johnstone two minutes later eased the situation. Brave Dumbarton! But they didnt count on Rangers second wind. Every visitor played like a hero. If anything, Williams, Drysdale and Cheyne were a shade above their fellows. For all their brilliant patches Rangers didnt impress in their moments of anxiety.
