Match Trivia

These clubs met for the first time this season on Kinning Park when a stiffly contested game ended in favour of the Rangers by three goals to two. Since last year a number of changes have taken place in both elevens, such well-known players as Paton, P Miller and Lindsay being absent from the Dumbarton team and Duncan and Heggie and several forwards from the Rangers, but as at present consisted both elevens are powerful combinations. The start of Saturday’s game did not look promising for the Rangers. In playing against a strong wind they were for five minutes badly pressed, and Chalmers was within that period twice applauded for smart goal keeping. Afterwards the play was of a more even character and the next feature was an attack on the Dumbarton goal. The Rangers got a corner but the ball was cleverly caught and sent behind by McAulay and the second kick from the corner flag resulted in the ball passing behind after striking the crossbar. The Dumbarton then took possession of the leather and made matters rather warm for the Kinning Park men, but though they got two corner kicks, a foul in front of goal, and a third corner in succession they were unable to score and shortly afterwards McKenzie for the Rangers made a splendid run and passing the ball across, Gossland headed the first goal for the home side. This result was obtained about five minutes from halftime. Two minutes later the Dumbarton right wing made a good run and sending in a ball with Chalmers was unable to reach equalised matters. The Dumbarton forwards out of a scrimmage scored a second goal 15 minutes after resuming play in the second portion and Gossland added a second goal for the Rangers five minutes later. Both sides were again equal, but from this point on till the finish the local team had the best of the play and scored a third goal. When time was called the Rangers were in front of the Dumbarton posts and just after the whistle had blown to stop play the ball was placed between the uprights. The score was of course disallowed and the game ended in favour of the Rangers by three goals to two. Disputes were rather frequent throughout the contest nearly all the goals being protested against by the opposing sides, and one member in each team showed a tendency to infringe the off-side rule. The respective goalkeepers saved numerous difficult shots and the backs and halfbacks on both sides played well. The two Browns were scarcely so effective on the right as they were in that position just last season, but McKinnon and Colville worked hard. The right wing of the Rangers was the only weak point in the front division. Morton one of the new members it is true worked hard but he was not supported by Corbett. McKenzie as usual, did good service and Pringle in his new position as centre never played a more useful game
