Match Trivia

The protested tie in the competition between the Rangers and Cowlairs was played at Cathkin Park in presence of fully 5000 spectators and ended in favour of the Rangers by the substantial odds of three goals to one. Despite the want of Brand who was disqualified from playing for two months for infringing the registration rules, the Ibrox team completely astonished all who witnessed the match, and proved themselves the best eleven at almost every point. Cathkin Park is by no means the most suitable field to witness a game at a time when a large crowd has assembled, and matters were rendered more disagreeable by the heavy rain which continued to fall all the time the game lasted. Much enthusiasm however had been evoked by the numerous meetings of the teams, and while the partisans of both were confident of victory at the start, the result was accepted as a relief to that suspense which borders on indifference when one has had disappointment. The Rangers won the toss and elected to play with the wind at their backs during the first round, and accordingly the Cowlairs kicked off. The ball was kept in the centre for a few seconds, but the Rangers forwards getting in line soon passed the Cowlairs backs, and in a scrimmage close on the goal, one of the defenders kicked behind. This gave the Ibrox team a corner flag kick, and in the scrimmage, which succeeded, the ball was headed through by Fraser. This was great work for the Rangers as the match was only about five minutes old. After the next kick off the Cowlairs forwards made a dash down on the Rangers backs, but the ball was cleverly returned by the backs, and in a short time the Rangers were backs to the Cowlairs sticks were a shot from Peacock had to be cleared by Duff. Not long afterwards the Cowlairs through Bishop, and Scott got well up on the Rangers lines, but D Gow by fine taking and judicious kicking saved his side. In turn the Rangers fairly invested their opponents line, and continued to make it hot for the Cowlairs backs, and caused McLeod to show a deal of brilliant back play on the slippery ground. At length after repeated attempts, a grand shot from Fraser went clean through, and as halftime was announced not long afterwards the Rangers were two goals ahead of their opponenets. No time was lost in starting the second round, and the north side team had now the wind in their favour. The Rangers kicked off, but the leather was soon returned back to the centre, and eventually scrimmaged over the lines. The throw-in by the Cowlairs was followed by a pretty combined run on the part of the whole of the Rangers forwards, and a shot from the foot of McKenzie only missed scoring by a few inches. No sooner had the ball been again kicked out in front by Duff that it was returned, and shot after shot was sent in at the Cowlairs goal. McLeod at this stage was playing brilliantly and was ably assisted in the difficult work by McCartney and McPherson. By and bye the play was transferred to the Rangers goal, where the Cowlairs through inferior combination in front lost a couple of fine chances to score, and not long afterwards a shot by Bishop had to be chucked away by Nicol. The leather however was soon brought back by Carson and Scott, and Bishop again following up had the ball passed to him in good position, and sent it spinning through. The record now stood as two goals to the Rangers and one to Cowlairs, but the next kick-off had only been taken for a few minutes when the Rangers after a beautiful combined run among the forwards, put on a third goal between the posts. The game to all intents and purposes was irretrievably lost for Cowlairs, but the latter team died hard, and repeatedly attacked the Rangers goal, but the goalkeeping and back play were as brilliant as the forwards, and when time was called the South-Side eleven won a hard game on heavy ground by three goals to one. The teams left in the final tie are now the Rangers and Cambuslang.
