Match Trivia

The final tie for the Glasgow Cup was played on Hampden Park before 10,000 spectators. The ground was pretty hard owing to the frost, but it did not materially interfere with the play. At 3.10 the Rangers kicked off, with a slight breeze in their favour, and at once Dunn had to kick out the ball from the mouth of the Cambuslang goal. A hand against the Rangers brought relief to the Cambuslang men, who were not long in transferring the ball and obtaining a corner from which, however nothing dangerous was experienced by the Glasgow club. Ultimately Cambuslang kicked the ball over the Rangers line. In a short time however, Cambuslang obtained another corner kick, but the ball was sent to the back of the Rangers posts. Once more the Rangers compelled the backs of the visitors to set strictly on the defensive, but this they did effectively. The Rangers once more moved the ball up to the Cambuslang goal, but being too eager to shoot, they sent it flying over the line. Continuing to press, Fraser, from the centre tried to score for the Rangers, the effect only failing by about a yard. The Glasgow men also obtained a corner kick, and McIntyre put the ball well in front a ‘header’, Dunn however saved at the expense of a second corner. The ball from the second corner kick was sent to the back of the Cambuslang posts. After some exciting play, the Rangers made a slip and Plenderleith got possession of the ball, but he was in too great a hurry in shooting, and put a fine chance of putting on a goal for his side. However J Gourlay got the ball passed over to him, and catching it with his head, scored a neat goal for the visitors twenty-five minutes after the kick off. Some very fine play ensured on both sides, the runs and counter runs being the best play on so far of the match. J Gow almost put on a point for the Rangers the ball just grazing the cross bar. Following this Peacock made a good effort to score the ball passing the post by about a foot. The Rangers were now pressing their opponenets somewhat, but all the same they were not playing with the fine combination shown by them on the previous Saturday. On the other had, the passing of the Cambuslang forwards was very neat and effective, and but for the back defence of D Gow and McFarlane might have proved disastrous to the Rangers. Donald Gow, who was playing an admirable game, took a long kick about 40 yards from Cambuslang goal at the stranger’s posts and the ball landed right in front. Dunn however in attempting to fist out only succeeded partially as the ball fell over his back and passing between the posts amid great excitement. McKenzie who was now doing good service for the Rangers on the right, set in a beauty to Dunn were on this occasion neatly returned the ball, which in turn was brought down to the Rangers ground where the Buchanan’s on the left put in some excellent work for Cambuslang. The Rangers back defence, however once more proved effective, as all the Glasgow men, played with great determination. However no more goals were taken, and at halftime the game stood equal – 1 goal each The Cambuslang commenced the second half with one of their usual rushes and at once hemmed in the Rangers, at whose goal they peppered quickly, the ball striking and rebounding from the cross bar in the most amassing manner, however relief came to the Rangers, and they too had a couple of tries at Cambuslang goal, but Dunn saved easily. Both sides at this time were working hard, and after some good passing by Cambuslang forwards, Plenderleith once more got on the ball, and sending in a low swift shot he evaded Nicol, who in trying to save, fell his length in front of goal. This placed Cambuslang in the ascendancy by two goals to one. The Rangers obtained a foul near Cambuslang goal; Hotson took the kick and Pringle tried to score, but the ball just grazed the cross bar of the Cambuslang upright. The play continued pretty equal for a time neither side having any advantage, till Cambuslang brought the ball u to the Rangers ground, where from a slight tussle H Gourlay scored a third goal for the strangers. The aspect of the game was now changed. The Rangers two goals down became excited, while the Cambuslang players seemed to take matters pretty coolly, and continued better than they did before. In fact it seemed all over with the Rangers men, as their opponents kept the ball very much in the Rangers ground, and held the upper hand of then till the close, which finished Cambuslang 3 goals Rangers 1 goal
