Match Trivia
With Ireland for Dixon, and Chalmers for Cunningham, Rangers just scraped through in their League game against Cowdenbeath last night at Ibrox. As a matter of fact, it was a penalty kick scored by McCandless that won the points. Eight minutes after the start Chalmers was well inside the penalty-box, but not in too good a position for a shot, when Chambers brought him down. The referee had no option, and McCandless gave Stevenson no chance. All over the piece Cowdenbeath were as good as the champions, who certainly did not fill the role of flag-holders. The outfield play of both sides was quite good, but the finishing on either side was never of a very high standard, due probably to the good work of the halfs and backs. Ireland played a more than a merely serviceable game in Dixon’s place, and Muirhead gave his best display since his return from America. But the man who took my eye most was A Rankine, the ex-Aberdeen forward, at centre half. His greatest fault was that his forward passes were often too far ahead. His defence was great. Meiklejohn almost scored before McCandless, with a great left-foot drive which hit the post and rebound off the diving Stevenson. Then again Hopewell, on the goal-line, stopped a great volley of a free kick by the Irish left back. Robb’s greatest difficultly was in the second half, when, low down, he stopped a rasper of a free kick by Willie Wilson. The keeper cleared at his second attempt
