Match Trivia
In the end Rangers won well their League contest with Aberdeen at Ibrox last night, but there was a period when it looked as if the Pittodrie fellows would make a draw of it. That was just shortly before Rangers, in the closing minutes got their second goal and made the points secure. Then Aberdeen put in an extra spurt, and even with Bert MacLachlan limping badly on the left touch-line they gave the ‘Light Blues’ much cause for anxiety. Their one desire seemed to be to hold what they had, which was reflected in the fact that when Henderson broke away, he found himself ploughing a lonely furrow. Both wings supports were engaged in defending. While the Rangers were the better side throughout, the finishing of the forwards was distinctly weak. In the first half Cairns counted inside ten minutes with a drive at a ball which came from Archibald – this I think, was really meant for a shot. Cunningham lifted a sitter well in, high over the bar. But the Ibrox forwards seemed afraid to shoot. Aberdeen’s attack did much good work on the left – when Jamie Smith was on the touch-line – his crosses were always dangerous. But after the turn the Granite City attack suffered. The reason – Smith was now a half-back. I counted eight Rangers corners in one quarter of an hour of the second half. Henderson missed the pinch of the match, and Morton, trying to make good Henderson’s mistake, walloped the ball high over the bar. Cairns collected the second gaol in the closing minutes after Blackwell had saved at point blank range from Cunningham. But, unfortunately for Aberdeen, the custodian palmed the ball for Tommy to net it. In the winning Ibrox side McCandless, Ireland, Meiklejohn, Cairns, Morton and Archibald were best, even if they shone only in patches. Aberdeen’s outstanding men were Blackwell, D Bruce, Forsyth, Grant, J Jackson and Smith. International Alec Jackson was seldom in the picture
