Match Trivia
These teams played a friendly match yesterday afternoon, on Ibrox Park before 6000 spectators. Only scratch elevens turned out, the international men on either side not having returned from England. Winning the toss the Rangers played with the sun, which was very strong at their backs. With the first rush the light blues sent the ball over the Celts lines, but as the players settled down the game became pretty equal. In ten minutes however John McPherson scored somewhat cleverly for the Rangers. But Collins could scarcely have saved in this instance. For a time after this both teams set to work, and some fine runs were carried out by the forwards – Doyle and Reynolds on the one hand, and Hay and Drummond on the other defending cleverly, and giving excellent display of back defence. The Celts especially warmed up to their work, and for a time assailed the Rangers goal securing several corner kicks and other advantage, but none of them brought any success to the Parkhead men, although Madden in trying to head in a goal, landed the ball on the top of the net. Barker when suspiciously offside scored a second goal for the Rangers, Doyle protesting strongly against the point being allowed. The referee however was obstinate. The Rangers turn for attacking followed and they for a time bustled the Celts as they did in the final for the Glasgow Cup, but still Doyle and Reynolds resisted with conspicuous energy, and prevented the Rangers forwards from further scoring. Barker had to retire just before halftime, having twisted his body slightly, but he soon came back on again. The score at halftime was – Rangers 2 goals: Celtic 0. Just after the kick off Reynolds cleverly stopped Wylie, as the latter was about to shoot at the Celtic goal – a certain point saved. After this however the Celtic men certainly experienced the hardest of lines while attacking the Rangers goal, but the ball striking the crossbar and rebounding into play, and Haddow cleverly returning several dangerous shots from the Celtic forwards. It was hard indeed on the Celts that just after this on the Ibrox forwards breaking away, John McPherson who had the ball centred to him by Barker (the latter having made a capital run up the field), should without any great effort, score a third goal for the Rangers. Nothing daunted however the Parkhead men played away energetically, but they were in dead bad luck in every corner of the field. Davie headed a fourth goal for the Rangers, but on the plea of offside the referee refused to allow the goal. The erratic shooting of the Celts substitutes, and the want of combination in their forward’s ranks, account in a great measure for their want of success, but all the same the Rangers played a splendid game. Davidson scored the Celts first goal, the result however of a well placed kick by Doyle. This was all the scoring, and the final result was – Rangers 3 goals: Celtic 1.
