The meeting of these redoubtable opponents in the semi-final tie for the Scottish Cu competition attracted a large attendance to Ibrox. Many came out of curiosity to witness the magnificent new ground of the Rangers. The great proportions of the field and the complete arrangements came in for the highest admiration. Unfortunately rain came on half an hour before the start, but it had little effect on the attendance, which numbered 33,000 all told. The clubs played the teams which duty in recent matches. The game was one of the hardest and most stubbornly contested of recent times. In the first half the Rangers had decidedly the best of the play, Neil and Drummond shining in the defence, and but for their erratic shooting they would certainly have been in the ascendancy. As it was the teams crossed level no goals. The second half was a supreme test of stamina on heavy ground, very much cut up. Although probably the preponderance of play was in favour of the Rangers, in this half at anyrate, it was fairly well distributed, with the Celtic if anything having the best of it. The Rangers however led in the scoring A Smith with a run from almost midfield outpacing Davidson, and sending the ball through seven minutes from the restart. A spell of determined play followed, and after 30 minutes the Celtic were awarded a penalty kick, from which Campbell equalised. This proved to be the turning point of the game. The Celtic encouraged by their success played with great vigour, and Bell from a corner by Gilhooley, scored the second and leading goal. To all intents and purpose the game was over, but the Rangers put in a great spurt, near the close, and a minute from time McPherson, after McArthur had saved twice, scored the equaliser. The result was a draw, two goals each, and on the whole it was probably a fair reflex of the play. There were one or two reputations made or sustained on Saturday’s play, and we refer to the fine form shown by Neil and Drummond. The gate money came to £774 17s 6d, and stands and enclosure to £202 15s 6d – total £947 14s. The match will be replayed on Celtic Park.
