Match Trivia
This holiday match, which has all the appearance of becoming an annual institution, took place yesterday afternoon at Ibrox Park, Govan. There was a good attendance of spectators fully 16,000 lining the enclosure. The spin of the coin favouring the Rangers, the Celtic kicked off. After a few passages in midfield the Rangers got off with the ball and Boyd shot. Reynolds fisted out, and a penalty kick was awarded. McPherson took the try, and with a clean shot he scored the first goal for the Rangers within a couple of minutes from the start. The Celtic next took up the running, their forwards laying a fine combined game. Time after time they beat the Rangers back division, but their shooting was a bit off. At last it came, a long shot by Campbell equalising the game fifteen minutes after the start. Both teams now exerted themselves to get on the leading point, and each goal was assailed in turn. Madden, Blessington and Campbell were prominent for the Celtic. A clinking shot by Madden struck the bar and went over. The Rangers also had hard lines – Cowan, McPherson and Boyd each having shots. At last the Celts got a second goal, the ball touching someone from a free kick and going through. The Rangers made strenuous efforts to improve their position, but they were met by a stubborn defence, which defied all efforts. Halftime result – Celtic 2 goals: Rangers 1 goal. On resuming the Celts scored a third goal ere a minute had gone, Montgomery trying to kick out an easy thing and missing it, the result being the ball rolled gently into the net. The Rangers who were rather taken aback at the scoring of this point, put on a spurt and played for all they were worth to improve their position. They could not beat McArthur however who was in grand form. At last from a free kick Boyd scored a second goal for the Rangers with a lovely header. For a holiday match play was of a very high standard of excellence. Towards the close the Rangers pressed severly, and McPherson got the ball into the net, but an appeal for offside was sustained. The Celts defended in rare style, Kelly being especially prominent. For the last ten minutes of the game the Rangers had all the play, but no further scoring took place. Result – Celtic 3 goals: Rangers 2 goals.
