Match Trivia

In presence of a fair turnout of Spectators, this home and homes fixture came off at Ibrox Park, and ended in favour of the Rangers by three goals to two. The ground was hard and slippery from the frost, and the players had considerable difficulty in keeping their feet. The Rangers were in exceptional form and on several occasions made such brilliant runs as reminded some of the older spectators of the form shown by them a dozen years ago. The Cambuslang men won the toss, and played with the wind during the first half. After the kick-off, taken by MacFarlane, of the Rangers and the play was pretty even for a time, and both goals were eventually endangered, but it was not till about twenty-five minutes play that the Rangers through Morton, scored a neat goal. After the next kick-off the Cambuslang team were beginning to play better together, and several fast runs were made down on the Rangers lines by Lowe and Richardson, but Reid kept goal well and saved. Not very long before half time was announced, a brilliant run by Wylie, Morton and McCreadie ended in the latter scoring. In the second round the Rangers kicked off, and made slow work at first, and the Rangers returned the ball very smartly, and Morton just secured the leather in time before it was sent over the touch-line. After this the Rangers showed up a little better, and McIntyre got the ball in rare form, and sent it well up the field, but in a scrimmage it was cleared away, and sent down by Ramsay, who was in the best of form. In turn the Cambuslang men got in on the ball in a good position, and after a nice run in which Stoat, Gourlay and Plenderleith let the way, Stott made a fine shot that took effect the ball going past the Rangers keeper in brilliant form. This made the game tow goals to one in favour of the Rangers, and after the next kick-off, taken by the Ibrox Park men, the Cambuslang men again attacked the Rangers lines, and a corner-flag kick fell to them in a few minutes. The ball was eventually fell to Lowe, but he miscalculated, and it went over the bar. After the kick out by the keeper, the Rangers led by Morton, Robin, Wyllie, got past the neutral flag in a clinking run, and Morton shot so hard that the goalkeeper just caught on to the ball and sent it into touch. The throw in resulted in the Cambuslang having the best of it by passing the leather, but a fine bit of talking by McIntyre relieved Stott of all responsibility, and a scrimmage was the result. For some time after this no progress was made till a fast run, in which Morton and Wyllie were prominent, and the latter made a shy that went over the bar. After this the Cambuslang men pressed, and a bit of a mistake by Mitchell gave them a corner-flag kick, but the ball was again badly managed and went over the lines harmlessly. The kick out by the home goalkeeper did not do much good for them, as Buchanan was again no the move, and a shy from him nearly beat Reid. Some even play afterwards occurred and from a fine bit of passing on the left by Morton, the ball was passed to McCreadie, who made a pretty goal for the Rangers – thus causing them to be two goals ahead. The teams then faced up once more in the centre, and if anything, the visitors had fully the best of it and pressed the Rangers hard. Two corner-flag kicks fell to Cambuslang, but again had bad management at the flag rendered them useless, as the ball went behind. The Cambuslang team however lingered a good long time in front of the Rangers ticks, and it took the backs and goalkeeper all their time to clear – the keeper at one time being obliged to hug the ball and keep possession to save his charge from quite a crowd of excited opponents. Towards the close the Rangers warmed up a bit, and a good run by Morton made the scrimmage so hot that the Rangers had a corner-flag kick. After this the Cambuslang men made a determined rush, and in a few seconds the forwards, with one of their famous rushes, were down the Rangers lines in a few seconds, and form a neat piece of passing by Brown, Plenderleith, and Gourlay a second point was made for them by the former. The whistle blew not long afterwards, leaving the contest a win for the Rangers by three goals to two.
