Match Trivia

This holiday match was played at Ibrox Park, Govan before 8000 spectators. The weather was showery, and the ground soft. Rangers were without N Smith, Mitchell and Miller. Having lost the toss the Rovers started the game against a strong breeze. They were soon defending, but the Rangers could not find an opening. Low and Chippendale were first to open up the game, but Drummond spoiled their chance just as they looked like doing something. A fine effort by Hyslop carried play to the opposite end. He screwed the ball past Brandon, and although Killean tried to get it the way McPherson pounced on it and scored the first goal for Rangers. The Rovers put on the pressure after this, and after some clever play Chippendale equalised with a shot, which Dickie could not possibly save. Immediately after, from a combined run, Wilkie breasted through a second goal for the Rovers. The venue of play again changed, and a long shot by Hyslop was converted into a second gaol for the Rangers by McPherson. The home team continued to have the best of it, and ere crossing over Hyslop scored their third goal. Halftime result – Rangers 3 goals: Rovers 2 goals. On resuming the Rangers made matters warm for the Rovers defence, but the latter lot stood well up to their work, Brandon and Dewar being especially prominent. At last the Rovers forwards got on the ball, and by a combined run got past midfield. Tierney then sent in a long shot, which Dickie made no effort to save, and again the game was equal. Play was very fast, each goal being visited in turn. Neither team could find an opening. Each had corners and also a goal disallowed for offside. Five minutes before the close Wilkie gave Dickie a shot to clear, which the Rangers did splendidly, but ere the ball travelled far Tierney fastened on it, and notched a fourth goal for Rovers. This finished the scoring, Rangers were distinctly off, and on play deserved to get beat. Result - Blackburn Rovers 4 goals: Rangers 3 goals.
