Match Trivia
Some 2000 spectators assembled at Kinning Park to witness the return match between these two clubs. A few weeks ago on the same ground they played off their first fixture, but neither could on that occasion assert superiority as no goals were scored on either side and this fact added considerable interest to the present meeting. The weather on Saturday was dry and the turf therefore in good order for a fast game. As it turned out this was one of the best contested and evenly fought battles we have seen for a long time. The Rangers were without the services of McKenzie and the Battlefield wanted Angus, but otherwise the teams were as strong as possible. The home team kick-off from the west goal about 3.45 and immediately bore down on their opponent’s lines, but Fraser passed to Sellar who handed the leather over to Webster and Cunningham. The latter getting within distance of Chalmers sent in a hot one, which the custodian had to punch out. Campbell on the right started a fine run in conjunction with Peacock and the pair were with much difficulty tackled by McAra when not far from the Battlefield goal. Again the Langside side left wing rushed away and Bone had to concede a corner kick. This was well saved by Chalmers and Sommerville got possession till he was successfully tackled by the opponent’s halfback near midfield. The Battlefield countered the pressure and got three corners in rapid success, but the home defence was very steady, and id Cameron and Downs were passed Chalmers was always in his place playing a magnificent game, and saving in a marvellous manner. Run and counter run was now the order of the day, the visitors having if anything the best of the play but halftime came without ant goals being scored. The second period was quit as fast as the first and some beautiful passing was shown on both sides. Shortly after changing of ends Sellar got on the ball and his fellows being well up one of the finest piece of combined play excited loud applause from the spectators not to be out done Sommerville, Peacock and Campbell responded with a pretty run the whole length of the field, but the former final shot was wide. After a quarter of an hour’s play the Battlefield’s forwards came away in a body amid loud cheers Cunningham headed a beauty past Chalmers. The Rangers lost no time in again kicking off and at this point got their first corner kick. The danger was averted however and the play transferred to the other end, where the backs and goalkeeper were kept busy for a time. Sellar had one or two deadly shots but the goal was well defended. The Rangers eventually raised the siege and about five minutes from time through a mistake of one of the Battlefield backs managed to get a goal. This was all the scoring and one of the prettiest and most gentlemanly games we have seen ended in a draw one goal each. For the visitors McAra and Cunningham were the most effective behind Mitchell played very creditable at goal. Sellar was carefully watched, but his judicious passing to his wing was one of the features of the match. A better pair than Webster and Cunningham could scarcely be imagined. Chalmers play was periled and he was ably assisted by his backs and half. Bone and Cameron showing most prominently. Forward Campbell played in a most prominently game and he with Sommerville were the best of the forwards.
