Match Trivia
This game took place at Kinning Park in presence of about 500 spectators and after a hard and fast game ended in favour of the strangers by two goals to one. Owing to delay in starting however, the last quarter an hour of the game was played in semi-darkness, and during this time the Morton got the point, which decided the match. The Rangers played with great dash in the first half till shortly before ends were changed, and had hard lines in not scoring more than one goal by inferior shooting at the last moment, but in the second round after the first five or six minutes the Greenock men had by far the best of the play and although much rougher in charging and general play, were faster on the ball and acted better together than the Rangers. In fact, several of the forwards of the Kinning Park team seemed perfectly frightened when they came near the Morton back and halfbacks, and frequently allowed the ball to be taken from them in a somewhat silly manner. In the first round the Rangers made it hot for their opponents near the start and all but scored in a few minutes, but by and by the game became more even and each goalkeeper had to use his hands to knock the leather clear of the sticks. At length the home team after a fine run on the right, the ball was cleverly passed to McPhee who sent it spinning through the Morton goal. Not long before halftime the Morton after getting a couple of corner-flag kicks, succeeded in forcing the ball through the Rangers fortress, although Chalmers had previously saved a hot one from the foot of Gray from taking effect. The teams thus changed ends one goal each, and at the start and indeed for tem minutes or so, the Rangers looked like having the game on hard; but the strangers wakened up wonderfully and from this to the call of time had by far the best of the play, and after pressing their opponents upon their goal and obtaining several corner-flag kicks succeeded in putting a second goal on record. Ere this occurred however, the forms of the players could scarcely be picked out in the darkness, and the spectators could only realise the fact that the strangers had scored a second goal when the two teams faced up in midfield and began the game a fresh. Time was eventually called, leaving the Greenock team the victors by two goals to one. On the winning side the forwards showed better pace and superior combination of that of their opponents for whom McPhee and McIntyre really played best. The Rangers, however seemed to lack that fine combination which characterised their play earlier in the season, and more particularly in their game with the Queen’s Park a month ago.
