Match Trivia

This game attracted a large concourse of spectators to Kinning Park notwithstanding the unfavourable weather, which however improved somewhat during the afternoon and became dry overhead. The game from start to finish was well contested, but on the whole the play of the forwards on both sides was disappointing more particularly that of the younger club in their defective shooting at goal in the first round when they should have scored at least once very easily ten minutes after the ball left midfield. The Rangers too lost several grand chances in the second round, when they were repeatedly within scoring distance of their opponent’s lines. There was very little wind at the start and no advantage was gained by the spin of the coin, but the younger team if anything had the best of it in the first five minutes and a neat run by Robb and W Sellar came pretty near scoring, but McHardy turned the ball in splendid style right in front of the goalkeeper and sent if flying down the field. After some hard scrimmaging the Rangers forwards headed by Gossland, Peacock and Lawrie made a fast rundown the field and by a nice shot very well judged, Peacock sent the ball spinning between the Battlefield posts close to the left upright. This fine bit of play was received with cheers. The teams again faced up in the centre and for some time afterwards the Rangers goal was hotly besieged by the younger club forwards and Chalmers had to show wonderful ability in stopping the numerous shots from the busy feet of Webster, Cunningham, J Sellar and Brown and saved his side from losing goals. Just before ends were changed however the home team came away in something like old Kinning Park form and a close shot by Cook just grazed the goal-bar. In a scrimmage, which took, place Peacock was accidentally hurt on the face and had to retire and shortly afterwards Cunningham on the opposite side also received injuries which necessitated his retrial from the field, so that in the second round both teams played a man short. In the last half the play was pretty even for sometime and it looked as if the Rangers were going to have it pretty much their own way till the Battlefield forwards getting past the Rangers backs by a gallant rush scored a clever goal out of a scrimmage, and made the game even, with one goal each. Not long after the next kick-off from midfield the Rangers made a fine run on the left to within a few yards of the Battlefield goal but was nearly collared by Wallace just as it was getting dangerously near, and sent down the field. Here a hard scrimmage occurred, of which the strangers had the best and getting well on the leather J Sellar kept possession and by a fine shot scored a second for the visitors. The young club as evinced from the cheering that followed this dashing bit of play were not without friends and this had a wonderful effect in the way of encouraging them to the end. It was now the Rangers turn to kick off and in five minutes or so afterwards McKenzie, Gossland and Pringle led a brilliant run down on the Battlefield goal and before the goalkeeper could make a selection of the side on which to defend his charge McKenzie sent the ball past him in grand style and made matters even. After this the Rangers had several close shots at the gate goal, but without effect and not long before time was called the Battlefield men not only relieved their lines but also made a successful raid into the Rangers territory and scored. When the ball was being dribbled up field by J Sellar, W Sellar and Brown the Rangers new back (Cherry) tired to stop Brown with the ball at his toe, but fell on the slippery ground. Seeing this Webster dashed in and securing the ball made a fine goal by a high shot past Chalmers. This was the last point of interest in the game, which thus ended in favour of the Battlefield by three goals to two.
