Match Trivia
In consequence of the above clubs being drawn against one another in the second round of the Association Challenge Cup, an event which is set for a decision on Hampden Park for Saturday, the first meeting of the clubs was looked upon with more than a little interest and a large crowd assembled on the ground of the senior club to witness the game. Some rain fell shortly before the contest started but it did not affect the condition of the ground and some fast and exciting play ensured the Queen’s Park eventually overcoming their youthful opponents by six goals to two. The home team played with the wind during the first round and after some very even play – each goal being endangered – Ker scored a goal for the Queen’s Park in five minutes, after the ball had been cleverly manoeuvred in front by Kay and Anderson. A second followed in another eight minutes out of a scrimmage, but several of the Rangers held up their hands for ‘offside’ an appeal was made by them to the umpires. The latter however seemed to be satisfied about the correctness if the score, and the Rangers had once more to bring the ball to midfield and after the kick off a fine run by Hill, Gossland and Ramsay ended in a clever goal being scored against the wind by the latter after the leather had been dribbled to within a few feet of the Queen’s Park posts. Some capital runs afterwards took lace on each side in which McArthur for the Queen’s and Gossland for the Rangers were conspicuous and just before half time the Queen’s Park managed to earn a third goal from a corner flag kick by Kay. Ends were then changed and from the other side of the park the younger club seemed to improve in their play and caused the Queen’s Park goalkeeper and backs a lot of anxiety about their goal the ball being kicked past their posts twice and handled by the keeper. In a little however the Queen’s Park superior combined forward play began to take effect and McArthur after making a brilliant run on the left passed the ball to Anderson and a fine goal was the concrescence. The game now stood at four goals to one and after a few minutes of even play another goal was scored for the seniors out of an exciting scrimmage close in on the posts. The Rangers after this made several plucky attempts to score but they were beaten off and again the Queen’s Park were credited with a sixth goal – the ball being put between the Rangers posts very cleverly by McArthur head after striking the crossbar. Just before time was announced the Rangers forwards made a brilliant run down on the Queen’s Park goal and after a determined scrimmage Hill by a smart kick put the ball under. The match thus ended in favour of the Queen’s Park by six goals to two.
