Match Trivia

This interesting match, which was played at Kinning Park, attracted a fair crowd of spectators. The weather was just a shade too warm for football and the sun at times caused the players to shade their eyes; but both teams engaged in the tussle with considerable spirit, and in the end the game was drawn when each club had earned a goal. The Rangers had by far the best of the game at the start and kept their advantage for some time by giving the Dumbarton men a lot of hard work in front of their goal and were only prevented from scoring repeatedly by brilliant work on the park of McAulay, who showed a clever pair of hands. At length however just as the first round was about up McIntyre and Heggie by a clever bit of combined tackling got the ball away from quite a shoal of Dumbarton legs and the first named passed it on to Corbett who ended a pretty run by sending it spinning through the strangers goal. In the second half the Rangers again pressed their opponents for a short time but eventually the play became more even and showed improvement on the Dumbarton side and they seceded in making the game even by sending the ball under in a scrimmage. The play on both sides although at times erratic in consequence no doubt of what of practice so early in the season, was on the whole very fast and exciting not a few of the Rangers forwards distinguishing themselves in dribbling and clever backing up. The new throw-in rule was of course observed and seemed to work very well although a marked difference was displayed by the players in the way it was used. When shying the ball in from the touch line not a few seemed to forget that the new arrangement enacts that a player must face the touch line and not any side of the field that may suit him best, and give undue advantage to his side. No doubt however when once the new rule is better understood through the crucial test of practice it will work well enough. For the Rangers Young and Duncan at back were in rare form, and did a lot of smart work while among the forwards Corbett, Pringle and Ramsay showed any amount of clever manoeuvring and genuine forward play and Gossland has a lot yet to learn in passing the leather judiciously in front of goal. For Dumbarton McAulay kept goal in splendid style and saved the Rangers from having a heavy record. McNab who did duty at back and Miller halfback were also in the best of condition while among the forwards Liddell and Hutton played best.
