Match Trivia

The famous Scottish Leaguers attracted between 4,000 and 5,000 spectators at Deepdale, says ‘Perseus’ in blustery weather. In the Scotch team there were a number of well-know figures, including the stalwart veteran, Drummond, wearing that familiar cap of his which we have seen on many International fields; Neilly Gibson and Robertson, two of the best halves Scotland had produced in recent years; Walker, the old Liverpool crack; RC Hamilton, who has played, of course, against England; and Alex Smith, who, with Cox of Liverpool, stands above all other outside lefts of the present day. Except that Stark played centre half vice Neil, the team was full strength. North End were without Orrell. Howell, Smith, Wilcox and Fenton. There was unfortunately a strong cross wind, but the stand served as a protection except near the two extremities of the field. The Scotchmen played pretty football from the start, Smith and Walker being the most prominent forwards in some neat passing attacks, while Robertson backed them up beautifully. It was a centre from the left wing that led to the first goal, scored in a scrimmage. Shortly afterwards McBride, who by the by, had no chance with the short that scored, saved a scotching drive from Robertson. Rangers eased somewhat, but still combined neatly, and though North End, whose forwards were not nearly so clever, several times pressed to the front by the energy of Walton and Pratt, they either fell before the resolute defence or failed at the last moment. Drummond was safe as ever at back, and after Pearson had missed an opening the interval came with the score 1-0 in the visitors favour. Half-time :- Rangers 1; North End 0. The second stage opened a trifle scrambling, but after rather over a quarter of an hour North End pulled themselves together and made several telling attacks. Bond who had played rather easily first half, woke up, and 23 minutes from the restart he evoked hearty applause by equalising with an oblique shot right of the wing. The light was fading slightly, but however good it had been Dickie could not have stopped the ball with which Pratt gave North End the lead from a pass by Bradshaw. Rangers tried in vain to equalise, and the Prestonians won a capital victory by two goals to one. No one would suggest that the Glasgow men were not a clever side, but they played a bit easy early in the second half, and when they wanted to score again could not do so, Preston finishing quite the better of the two. Rangers protested that Pratt’s goal was offside, but Mr CC Fallowfield right ruled otherwise. It was an enjoyable game. Among the Scotchmen who caught the eye were Drummond at back, the wing halves (Gibson and Robertson) and the left wing (Walker and Smith). For North End McBride was first rate, the two young backs fair, the halves hard working, with Tod best. Bond was the best effective forward second half, but the other extremist, Pearson was palpably misplaced . Play was stopped seven minutes before time owing to the gathering darkness – Result – North End 2; Rangers 1.
