Match Trivia
This fixture took place at Port Glasgow on Saturday in fine weather before an attendance of 12,000. Port kicked off and immediately were strongly attacked by the visitors, but Ward’s kicking was sure and there was no result. Hamilton attempted to head in a fine centre by Gray, but Port’s custodian met him cleverly. Ross and Cunningham were having good tries on a return to Rangers end, but their efforts were futile. Gladly Hamilton sent in to Mainds, who shot what looked a dangerous one, but Sinclair negotiated easily. Some time latter Hamilton struck the Port’s bar with a stinger. A transfer to the other end resulted in Cunningham scoring the only goal of the day. O’Brien was hurt and carried off the field about ten minutes from close of the first half. The second half showed play as clever and determined as the first half, but Rangers although all along the superior team were incapable of getting through. Ward, who played one of the finest games of his life, was on repeated occasion called on to defend continued fusillade, out of which he emerged with wonderful luck. Towards the close McColl failed to take advantage of a fine pass to centre by Smith, and a few minutes before the finish, Hamilton shot past. Result –Port Glasgow 1: Rangers 0. All though both teams played a hard game, Rangers showing better final and calculation than the homesters. Ross for Port, did excellent service, May and Stark of the halves did capital work. Port defence was a sterling one
