Match Trivia

About six thousand persons witnessed in Cathkin Park the match between the Rangers and Notts Forest. As the match in Queens’ Park ended at half-past four, many of the spectators there afterwards hurried down, and paid their money for admission to Cathkin Park. The Notts wore red Garibaldi’s, and the Rangers their favourite light blue. The wind blew across the field, so that neither period was an advantage. For the first half hour the one team played as well as the other, and the ball, which travelled rapidly, was as often at one end as the other. Eventually the Notts got their first corner, but it ended in nothing. The Rangers then got to the other end and sent in an effectual shot. For a few minutes they gave the backs of the strangers much to do. Twice Beardsley saved smartly from scrimmages, and then McKenzie sent him a one which however was a little off the mark. For a good many minutes the Rangers had much the better of it, but they could not break down the strong defence. The goal was cleared again and again in capital fashion by Beardsley, but at length after a hard struggle he was forced to capitulate and thus the Rangers secured their first goal five minutes from haft time. The first half ended with the Rangers one goal to the good. The second period was much like the first the ball travelling up and down the field with great rapidity, and both goals were endangered. D Gow after taking the ball from one of the Notts forwards carried it right up the field and let fly at goal. But the ball was got away. A hot scrimmage, during which several players kissed mother earth, now took place in the right-hand corner of the Notts goal. The Reds had the best of the impromptu ‘maul’ but they were not allowed to carry the ball far. The Rangers were working very hard, and time after time they attacked the goal furiously, only to be beaten either by timely kicking of McLeod or Hancock, or the prompt deliberate fisting of Beardsley. The Reds made a very hard try to equalise and they were very nearly successful. One shot was promptly fisted out by Chalmers and a second just cleared the bar on the topside. With the assistance of Fraser and Peacock, McKenzie too the ball to Beardsley’s end. It stayed here foe some minutes until Hobson sent it over the bar with a long shot from halfback. During the next few seconds the Notts goal was very warmly attacked, but the defence was too strong to be overcome. The Rangers now gained a couple of fruitless corners, after which Fraser sent the ball through, but he was ruled offside. Shortly after this Beardsley in attempting to stop a ball from going over the line fell and sprained his foot. The game was stopped for several minutes, the goalkeeper having to be carried off the field. Play was pretty even for the few minutes that were to go. Result – Rangers 1 goal; Notts Forest nil.
