Match Trivia
Played at Nottingham on Saturday in the presence of 3000 spectators, fine weather prevailing. The Scotsmen won the toss and after the kick off made a raid on Nottingham goal but were repulsed and the Foresters twice threatened the Rangers goal, which was splendidly defended by Gillespie. Vallance and Stewart were cheered for their grand back play, the determined attacks of the Nottingham men being kept off mainly by their efforts. The Foresters played a faster and better passing game than their opponents, Widdowson and Earp being particularly brilliant and Sands kept goal well. No score took place up to half time; but with charge of ends the Foresters pressed the Scotchmen and at length a foul by McNeil gave the home team a free kick, which was turned into goal by Widdowson and Smith. On resuming the visitors were compelled to act mainly on the defensive although McNeil, Struthers, Steel and McIntyre occasionally caused a division in their favour; but the Forest Captain making a grand run from the centre, evaded Vallance and passing to Earp the latter in conjunction with Smith and Lindsay rushed the ball through the Rangers posts for a second time. Glasgow now rallied and the termination of a prettily concerted run by McNeil, Struthers and Hill was a scrimmage underneath the Forrest posts and the ball was forced through. From this point till the end of the game the visitors more than maintained their advantage and nearly succeeded in making matters equal from a corner kick just before time, but were eventually beaten for the first time on English ground by two goals to one
