Match Trivia
This return League match at Greenock was invested with special interest owing to Morton’s defeat of Rangers at Ibrox, and there was an attendance of over 5000 spectators. After an opening dash in on the home goal by Rangers play settled down in favour of Morton, whose forwards at this period showed bright and clever form, though they failed to press home their attacks on goal. Turnbull in particular failed badly on one occasion when a score seemed a certainty. At the end of half an hour Rangers took u the running and a mistake by Eadie gave a chance to Kivlichan, who whipped the ball past Robertson. Shortly afterwards May added a second goal with a splendid long shot, and Rangers crossed over with a lead of two goals to nothing. Morton restarted in determined fashion, but were borne back by Rangers, who for a short spell were all over the home team, and Hamilton netted for the third time with a clever screw kick. Nothing daunted, Morton played up in the pluckiest fashion, and for some time they severly pressed the visitors defence. Wretched luck however dogged them for they could do everything but net the ball. Grieve indeed did beat Sinclair, but the referee ruled him offside, a decision which was roundly hooted. Afterwards play was pretty even, just before the close Eadie was ordered off. Result – Rangers 3: Morton 0. An unfortunate occurrence took place after the match. A portion of the crowd apparently dissatisfied at some of Mr McCorkindale’s decisions subjected him to considerable rough usage on his way to Cartadyke Station.
