Match Trivia
The contest in the association cup-tie was played at Mauchline on Saturday in presence of a large turnout of spectators. From the very outset and contrary to all spectators, the Rangers commenced to press their opponents. The forwards quickly setting down to their work, soon were crowding round the Mauchline goalkeeper, who had to kick out in self-defence. Although corner kick for the Rangers followed one another pretty freely when half time was called they had only placed one goal to their credit, which however was disputed. When Vallance kicked off at half time his forward with combined rush at once assumed the offensive. Although at times the Mauchline were successful in breaking away the ball was always speedily brought back for renewed fighting in their territory. It was not however till the game was pretty well advanced that the Rangers succeeded in placing the first goal in this half to their credit. This was speedily followed by other two, one of which was taken in determined scrimmage at the very mouth of the goal. For the Mauchline, the forward play of Wilson on the right cannot be too highly praised; the play of Smith on the left was also good. For the Rangers the dashing play of the forwards at times was very bothering to the opposing backs – M McNeil, P Campbell and Hill being particularly conspicuous. The back play of Wm McNeil and Gillespie was also good
