Match Trivia

Pardon the infringement on an old Jacobite song when we exclaim in sorrow – “Wae’s me for the Rangers!” Bad weather prevented the turnout at this match from being large and undoubtedly injured the form of the speedy and popular idols of Kinning Park; but we have a strong opinion the weather never chilled a frame nor made bright an eye that could make such a difference to the teams as would prove the present eleven of the Glasgow Rangers superior to the Kilmarnock. Against the wind the home team were quite equal to their opponents, and although the Rangers were oftener at their opponents goal, it could scarcely be called pressure as Richmond seldom touched the leather. The Kilmarnock forwards were not long in noticing a weakness in the visiting team, and after resisting several attempts on the park of the Rangers to score, with quite unusual vigour they assailed the opposite end never halting till they had scored the first goal. From the start, the Rangers seemed to suffer from excitement, but after this surprising reverse they played even worse, and their efforts at goal were of the most harmless description. Half-a-dozen corner kicks came to nothing, but latterly McIntyre scored by a place kick, the ball just passing between Richmond’s hands and the top bar. During the second half the Kilmarnock put on a stiff pressure and before the close of time had added considerably to their total, winning what might be almost called a one-sided game by 4 goals to 1. The play of the Rangers was disappointing. Chalmers (their expert little goalkeeper) did his duty well, McIntyre tackled in his usual formidable fashion, and Heggie played up brilliantly in the last few desperate minutes of the game; but on the whole the team did not uphold its reputation. The Kilmarnock played a sound game all through – in defensive and aggressive action being superior to their opponents. The halfbacks department was very strong – McPherson especially showing such form that if the news goes to England we may soon expect a visit from the ‘Howm’ poacher. The forwards were very active – Walker doing giant service, while young McPherson (who has somehow or other dropped on to a pretty style of play) showed up very well in the second half. Both clubs were in full force.
