Match Trivia
A crowd of nearly 15,000, a thousand of whom travelled per special train from Glasgow and hundreds by the ordinary trains, testified to the extra-ordinary interest taken in this return match at Easter Road, Edinburgh. It was though that the Rangers phenomenal record stood in danger of being at last broken during the engagement; but as events turned out, the League champions survived as game two-thirds of which was entirely against them. Playing downhill in the first half, under the fairest of weather conditions, the Hibs had the best of matters from the outset; but thanks to Dickie’s splendid saving, not even a penalty kick against Drummond for handling the ball in the goalmouth found the Rangers defence lacking. Several times too, McCartney sent in stinging shots, which were cleverly negotiated, while an one occasion a shot from the same player rebounded off the far-off post into play when Dickie seemed beaten. The Rangers on the other hand, were never so dangerous, and on the whole the champions were decidedly fortunate in crossing over without a point scored against them. For about twenty minutes in the second half the Rangers appeared contented enough with playing level with the vigorous young opponents, but their superiority gradually asserted itself, and Smith outmanoeuvring of Hogg resulted in the former scoring a couple of clever goals, the first of which in itself practically won the match for the Ibrox club. During the closing stages the Hibs were a beaten team, but their demoralisations were excusable after the splendid yet fruitless efforts they had made. Result – Rangers 2 goals: Hibs 0
