Match Trivia
The second of the Edinburgh autumn holiday matches was played at Easter Road, when the Rangers paid their second visit to the capital under Scottish League auspices. Unfortunately the weather was wet, and there would be about 7000 spectators present. The Rangers had three changes from Saturday’s eleven – Gibson, Graham and Speedie in place of Robertson, Lennie and Walker. The Hibs rearranged their team bring in McCartney, who made his first appearance since the accident last March, and a junior from Barrhead, Ferenese in centre. The Hibs started the game and with the wind in their favour, forced the Rangers to act on the defensive, and Dickie was called upon to save some well-directed shots. Neil and Drummond broke up the attack, let the visiting forwards away, and A Smith tested Rennie, who saved. The Rangers kept up a persistent attack on the Hibs goal, but the defence was equal to all demands. Nearing the interval the ‘green jerseys’ attacked but halftime arrived with no scoring. On resuming, Speedie sent in a grand shot, which was grandly saved by Rennie. Callaghan then took up the running, and after beating the backs, passed over to McCartney, who tested Dickie. After this the game became dull. A series of bouts between McCartney and Drummond raised the enthusiasm of the crowd, and when at last McCartney beat the Rangers man, Dickie had to be alert in stopping his shot. At the other end Graham all but scored, Rennie being taken by surprise though he saved. After this Rennie was kept busy, but saved in masterly fashion. After surviving a spell of attacking by the Rangers, the Hibs broke away, and McCartney after beating Drummond centred across and Stewart shot in the ball, which struck the inside of the post and landed into the net. The Rangers retaliated in brisk fashion, but met a sound defence and time arrived with the result – Hibernian 1 goal: Rangers 0.
