Match Trivia

Seeing that on the first meeting of the teams this season the Rangers had beaten the Hearts at Ibrox by 5 goals to nil, and that the home club were weakly represented at Tynecastle in the return game yesterday, the ‘Light Blues’ looked certain to annex a couple of points. As things turned out, however the unexpected happened, and the scratch lot who represented the Hearts, working with a dash and vigour which is absent in the play of the Rangers, gained a well deserved victory by 2 goals to 1. The shot passing methods of the Rangers were baulked by the sound tackling of the home halves, while the Hearts forwards adopting a kick-and-rush system, proved wonderfully successful. There were 10,000 spectators present to witness the play. The Hearts played with the sun, but immediately the Rangers took up the play, and Gibson taking up the ball drove one in which surprised Fairbairn, and got a goal. This fairly roused the Hearts, and from this until the close of the first half they had certainly the better of what was going. A corner, which Walker kicked, was only partially stopped by Dickie, and Robertson who was lying handy equalised. After this there was no stopping the Hearts forwards and halfbacks, and Gray who was laying a fine game at middle half, placed one to Wallace, who headed through only to have the point negative either for offside or obstruction, possibly for both faults. Only a little after however, the leading point came. Gray threw the ball in, and Dickie stopped it, but it rebounded, and Gray again taking it up banged it into the net. Hard play followed, but there was no more scoring at halftime. The second half was well contested, but the Rangers were greatly handicapped by an accident to Hyslop, who was practically of no use throughout the game. With their best shot injured, and the chances missed. The Hearts played hard, but Drummond and Smith were always there, and though many opportunities presented themselves, none was utilised, and the game ended – Hearts 2: Rangers 1.
