Match Trivia
This fixture was played at Tynecastle, Edinburgh, before about 10,000 spectators. The result, from its bearing upon the ultimate possession of the championship was of very great moment to both teams and as the Edinburgh med had already inflicted defeat upon their opponenets twice this season the amount of interest excited can be readily imagined. The field notwithstanding the frost was in fairly good playing order, and the weather, though chilly, was tolerable. The visitors kicked off, and after a little dilly-dallying in the centre, Scott went along and made a rare attempt to pass Crawford. The latter however spoiled the venture. Play gradually came towards Cox, and Barker was to a large extent responsible for the change. A foul was given in the midst of the Rangers advance, but Smith headed the ball far over the bar. A tricky bit of passing, in which West forwards all, had their share, but Cox again on his mettle, but Battles puzzled Barker, and the ball went into touch. McPherson and Barker again took up the running, but they retired discomfited from a well-sustained defence. The Rangers were nothing if they were not strong in combined rushes, and the effect was in evidence whenever the Hearts prospects were looking rosy. But try as they might, the visitors could never get in. The Hearts right wing tried after a spell of uninteresting play, to infuse some life into the game, but the opposing back division were always ready for what it had to meet. As a matter of fact, the Hearts forwards play was very much off the usual level, and compared to their opponenets front division, their play was differently inferior. Halftime arrived without scoring on either side. The second half opened in a gradually disappearing light. The Hearts apparently meant business for at once they rushed upon the Rangers goal. A penalty kick was given, bit it went wide. Another venture by Scott and his supporters was similarly fruitless. The Rangers forwards however gave signs that their running had not departed, and they got to the other end, through a strong opposition. The game now became fast and furious and Scott twice had a try at the post with shots, which were well enough directed, but just as well repelled. A scrimmage in front of Montgomery’s posts, and a subsequent corner, turned out to be the advantage of the other side, and with an interval of high kicking the minutes passed. A flutter was occasioned among Tynecastle followers when Scott successfully weathered Cowan and passed over to Michael in Montgomery neighbourhood, but a series of bungling errors by the Hearts forwards resulted, as it deserved to. The next few minutes saw the Hearts vainly endeavouring to force the Rangers backs, but Crawford and Gibson were always strong enough to resist. The sallies of the home team were far better sustained as the end of the game was drawing near, and the Rangers goal had one or two near shaves ere the pressure could be reduced. This was done by determined effort on the part of the Rangers left wing, and the Hearts failed to recover their advantage for some time. A desperate attempt was made by the Hearts right wing shortly before the finish, and a persistent attack was kept up, which Baird terminated with a shot over the posts. Intense excitement persisted two minutes from time, when the Hearts forwards crowded together at the Rangers goalmouth, and made repeated attempts to send the ball through. These shots were met by a bit of remarkable fisting out on the part of Montgomery. The pace was kept up after relief had been thus attained, but the match ended in a draw – no scoring.
