Match Trivia
This match took place on the ground of the Glasgow club, Kinning Park in presence of a very fair turnout of spectators, and ended in favour of the Rangers by seven goals to three. Frost and snow combined made the playing portion of the ground somewhat hard, but the sun shone out during the afternoon, and made matters more pleasant for all concerned. There was little or no wind blowing, and the home team who won the toss, allowed their opponents to defend the upper goal by kicking off. The ball was well followed up, after some good tackling and passing by the Greenock forwards, McCall and Lindsay got among the Rangers backs, but Hume by a neat bit of play cleared his lines in front of the goalkeeper, and got the ball away. After some scrimmaging the Rangers had the best of it, and Gossland and Peacock getting away in one of their well known runs, brought the leather close up on the Northern lines, but Gossland parting shot went behind. After the kick out in front the play continued in the centre for a time, and after some hard tackling between the Rangers backs and the strangers forwards, Lindsay and McNeil shot out from among the players, and in the play that succeeded out of the Rangers halfbacks sent the ball behind his own goal-line. This gave the Greenock men a corner flag kick, but it came to nothing, as the leather was cleverly punted away from goal by McIntyre. After this the Rangers gradually improved in their play, and had by far the best of it, and a brilliant run by the whole forward division, led by Buchanan, Gossland and Pringle ended in the first goal being scored. After the next kick off the Northern backs made but a feeble resistance to the bold attacks of the Rangers forwards and a second point was soon scored for them by Heggie, and a third by Pringle. Halftime was now called, with the home team three goals ahead. It was now the Rangers turn to kick off, and before the Northern had fairly realised their position the ball was u at their goal, and at once scrimmaged clean through. It was now considered a foregone conclusion for the home eleven, with four goals ahead, but the young Greenock combination made a splendid effort to save themselves and a clever run by McNeil, Cameron and Lindsay ended in the former scoring a goal. Encouraged by this dashing bit of play, the strangers were at it again, and a second goal was soon registered for them. The Rangers, who had been getting a little careless in their back play, now warmed u, and put on other three goals by good dribbling and passing – one of them being got by a beautiful shot from the foot of Buchanan, who cleverly dodged the goalkeeper. Before the game ended, however the Greenock players improved their position to the extent of another goal, and when time was called the match ended in favour of the Rangers by seven goals to three
