Match Trivia
Benefit Match. The match that have recently took place under the superintendence of the Falkirk District Charity Association was played last Thursday night between a team picked from the most important eleven in Falkirk and Camelon and that important west country club the Rangers. The composition of the Falkirk district team as will be seen from the subjoined was a fairly passable one, but not one that could be said to be impossible to improve upon. The home team gained the toss and chose to play the first half with the field and the slight wind in their favour. The game had a rather astonishing start. The Rangers centre kicked off and by passing to the right wing got clear of the opposing forward then again getting it at his feet he dodged the half backs and afterwards took a long shot but it was too high. The goal kick ended the Falkirk men to get the ball into midfield. Here both forwards made strenuous effort to gain the advantage and in the endeavour the ball was passed and re-passed from side to side of the field until Gillespie and Love succeeded in having a run which had several obstacles to encounter and which at last passed the side of the goal. Shortly after Love had a corner kick, but it gave no decided advantage to his team. The venue of play was shortly afterwards changed. The ball was run splendidly by Smith and Cook into the back quarters. Here Nisbet was ever turned in an endeavour to secure the ball and Hamilton next endeavoured to stay a shot, but fouled the ball in the attempt. Nisbet cleared his team from the danger and once more the game proceeded in midfield. Halftime was reached without any score. McLauchlan resumed the second half; but the Rangers immediately after he kicked the ball took procession of it. They were stopped from proceeding beyond the backs by Hamilton, but still the visitors would not permit the home players to cross midfield. They again got possession the themselves of the leather and dodging their way they got round Turnbull who along with the backs had hard work for some time warring off a number of shots. At length these attempts were rewarded. McKenzie sent in the ball from the halfback quarter. It landed in front of the goal and the left wing rushed in and kept it there till the centres assisted them in overpowering the backs when the first goal was scored. In about two minutes After McKenzie again centred the ball from the corner of the field and again the result was a goal. For a while the play changed in favour of Falkirk who made several attempts to get within scoring range. After this short relapse the strangers returned to the assault and soon had a corner. Cameron took this well and by landing the ball at the right side of the goal enabled McKenzie to score a third goal. Following this additional success the strangers soon had another corner, but this was kicked behind the goal. Nisbet by a long kick enabled his forwards to penetrate their opponent’s territory, but on approaching the backs they lost the ball as it was once more returned, run down, passed and re-passed and then sent through. Just before time was called the home players had a good run but on coming with a few yards of the goal Oliver missed the ball and lost a splendid opportunity. The result of the game was Rangers 4 goals Falkirk District 0. After the match the Rangers were entertained to tea in the Commercial Room of the Blue Bell Hotel
