Match Trivia
Benefit Match for Sergeant McNeil of 8th Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers. These clubs played a friendly game last night on Barrowfield Park for the benefit of ex-Sergeant Instructor McNeil, of the 8th Lanark. The band and pipers of the 8th were in attendance, and the 3000 spectators who assembled witness a splendid match. The Clyde kicked off, and at once made for goal, but was checked by Gow, who was in splendid fettle. McKenzie then got on the ball, and having run down, shot for goal, but missed. Stevenson then collared the ball for the Clyde, but his career was stopped by McFarlane, who kicked well down the field, where an unsuccessful attempt at scoring was made. The Clyde had a splendid opportunity in a free kick from within 20 yards from goal, but Britton made a mess of it. After this the Rangers, who had the best of the play all along, had several good tries at goal, and on one occasion claimed that the ball went through, but the point was disallowed, and the teams crossed over without any goals being scored. In the second half matters underwent a complete change. From the very beginning the Clyde had much the best of it, and with few exceptions the play was confined to the Rangers side of the field. Again and again the home team pressed round the strangers goals posts, and but for erratic shooting the Rangers colours must have been lowered. Even as it was Nicol’s powers of defence were frequently tested. The Rangers were only once or twice over the centre line during the second half, and never became very dangerous. The game resulted in a draw – no goals.
