Match Trivia

After an interval of fully half an hour the Rangers, who had just succeeded in reaching the second round of the Scottish Cup competition, faced the famous Preston North End at Ibrox Park. The weather was of the most miserable description, rain continuing to fall throughout the game. This no doubt interfered with the turnout of spectators which, considering the status of the teams was most disappointing. Not more than 1000 witnessed the game, and the Rangers must have dropped money on their day’s programme. Ten minutes after the advertised time Fraser started the game, the Rangers having lost the toss. Favoured by the wind the North End were soon in the Rangers territory, and Dewhurst had a try, but Gillespie fisted out. Thomson, however was lying handy, and by a swift shot placed the first goal to the credit of the ‘pros’ within five minutes of the start. From the kick-off, the North End again bore down on Gillespie, and Dewhurst nearly registered a second. A foul against Holmes gave the Rangers relief, and they had a look in, but their effort, for want of combination, were fruitless. There was a marked difference between the tactics of the teams. A corner fell to the North End, but the wind carried the leather over the line. Immediately after, their forwards, by a combined rush, looked like scoring, but the final shot was sent far over the bar. Eaglesham and McLachlan raised the hopes of the Rangers supporters by a good run up the left wing. Ere they got dangerous, however Holmes stepped in and transferred the lay to the opposite end, when Goodall got on the ball, and passing it to Thomson, that players scored No. 2 for the visitors. The game was restricted to two thirty-five, and halftime sounded shortly after with the score – north End 2 goals; Rangers 0. The second half was almost a repetition of the first. With the kick-off the North End began to press their opponents. Fully 10 minutes had gone, however before Thomson beat Gillespie for the third time. The wonder is that the North End did not increase their score considerably. A fourth goal was cleverly taken by Goodall. All interest in the game was now at an end. The rain came down very heavily, and spoiled effective play. Towards the close several of the home team showed signs of having enough of it. No more goals were scored and the game resulted as follows – Preston North End 4 goals; Rangers 0. Note this match was played only one hour after the Scottish Cup-tie with Partick Thistle and was 35 minutes each way
