Match Trivia

This match was played on Celtic Park before 24,000 spectators; the weather was wretched rain falling all the time, making the ground heavy and difficult to play on. The Celtic lost the toss and kicked off against the wind. The Celts at once burst away only however to be brought up by Drummond, who relieved with a huge kick. Blessington was very tricky and smart on the ball, and it was due to him in a considerable degree that the Celtic scored their first goal a few minutes from the start. He banged the ball right in Dickie got it, but dropped it at his feet, and before one could well realise it King had it through. The cheering had scarcely died away ere a loud shout proclaimed the equaliser by the Rangers. Kelly gave away a corner, which was very well placed. Hyslop headed in, and McPherson scored. McPherson led another run, and looked like scoring, but he sent the ball past. A slip by Battles very nearly allowed Miller to score with a fast shot, which Cullen just managed to throw out. So far the Rangers had the best of the play, but then it must be remembered the Celtic were battling against the elements. The Rangers had tantalising luck, the ball on one occasion skimming the bar and going over. The ground was very heavy, and travelling very difficult being all against the quick, tricky work of the Celtic forwards. Kelly gave the Celtic forwards a grand chance of breaking the monotony. He passed the ball along to King, who made off in quick style, passing in turn to Divers, who made a sorry miss, shooting wildly past. However at this stage the Rangers were being hardly pressed, giving away a corner, which happily for them proved abortive the ball going over the bar. King was going in great style for the Celtic, working hard and earnest, and it was no fault of his that goals were not being scored. Blessington gave Divers a splendid chance, be he was not in the mood at all, his shooting being far off the mark indeed. The Rangers got a free kick close to the Celtic goal. The ball was beautifully placed, and how the Rangers did not turn it to account was marvellous. The Celtic were prominent with some very precise and minute passing, taken part in by nearly all the forwards, and in the end compelling the Rangers to concede a corner. The ball was splendidly placed, but was easily headed out of danger. A foul was given against the Celtic right in front of their goal, but no advantage was gained, the ball being sent over the bar. The Rangers were undoubtedly having the best of it this half, and with ordinary luck might easily have led. Free kicks against the Celtic were frequent, but the Rangers could not turn them to good purpose. Mitchell shot past from a free kick, and Miller form a corner placed the ball behind, losing good opportunities. At halftime each side had a goal. On resumption of play, Madden had a chance to give his team the lead, but he shot past. But deadly shooting under the circumstances was out of the question. The Celtic had the wind in their favour this half, and certainly everything looked favourable for their chances. King as usual led the Celtic attack, but Drummond was always on the lookout for him, and generally blocked his progress. The Rangers were playing quite as effectively as they were in the first half, and some of the passing they displayed was really grand. They invariably led in the attack, and but for Cullen’s very smart saving, they would easily have scored. He saved a very fast shot at a critical juncture. Two corners in succession fell to the Celtic, Blessington on trying very hard to turn the second one into account, but just failed the ball going over the bar. The game throughout was a terribly hard one, and the exertions of the players to gain the mastery were of the most arduous description. There can be no doubt the Rangers were more than holding their own, and a little luck would certainly have given them the lead. The Celtic made desperate endeavours to get the lead, and Divers headed the ball through, scoring what looked a legitimate goal. To the consternation of the Celtic supporters the referee gave offside a decision that was anything but well received. But perhaps it was the right one; at anyrate the referee was in the best position to judge. Time was wearing on, and every bit of play was watched with the closest scrutiny. Dickie latterly did yeoman service for the Rangers; so did Cullen for the Celts. It was a close and exciting time of it, probably the Rangers all through having the best of it. Latterly the Celtic were having all the best of it, and it was only great efforts on the part of the Rangers that kept them from getting the lead. A great game considering the weather and ground, ended – Celtic 1 goal: Rangers 1 goal. As the referee left the field the crowd made a rush for him, but thanks to the Celtic officials, he got into the pavilion with out injury. A riotous scene followed, and the police had to use their batons to quell the disturbance. One man was severly injured on the head. The money taken at the gate was £564 1s 3d, representing an attendance of 24,000 people. At the grand stand the money taken was £200 1s, making a grand total of £764 2s 3d, of which the Celts will, roughly speaking have £560 after all expenses are paid.
