Match Trivia
These two clubs met for a second time this season in Blackburn on Monday afternoon when they played in aid of the East Lancashire Infirmary. More than usual interest was evinced in the match as the two contending teams were so equal. On the last occasion they met neither succeeded in scoring a goal. Both teams were strong, but the wet weather, which prevailed during the morning, made the ground very sloppy and unfit to play upon. Brown set the ball in motion at 3.20 and Avery receiving it passed to J Hargreaves who when in front of goal made a capital try. Samuels received it in his arms and sent it out. Ker next dribbled into the Rovers quarters, but J Hargreaves brought it down and was tackled by A Vallance. Avery centred and J Duckworth by a good shot placed it safely between the posts, a few minutes after the game had started. On the resumption of play the ball travelled in the direction of the home goal, where Pringle shot but being too strong it passed over the top bar. A corner immediately fell to the visitors and the leather was rapidly passed to and fro in front of the Rovers posts and out of a hot scrimmage Smith registered a goal. A few minutes after this Struthers after a run on the left recovered the ball and finally brought it right in front of the home uprights and notched a second goal for the Scotchmen. Another run was next made on the Rovers goal, but this was returned with interest, a free kick being given to the Rovers owing to ‘hands’ from T Vallance. F Hargreaves passed to McIntyre, who made a beautiful shot the ball only barely passing over the top bar. The Scotchmen now for several minutes pressed the Rovers severely, but matters were almost equalised by the magnificent play of J Duckworth and but for J Hargreaves slipping, a goal would have been almost certain. No sooner had the ball been kicked out then it was again brought up to the Scotch uprights where J Hargreaves centred and matters were made equal by Douglas placing the leather between the visitors goal. A free kick in front of the Rovers goal momentarily jeopardised the home uprights but the ball passed outside. A scrimmage took place in front of the visitor’s castle and a throw in on the right wing only just missed scoring. In the struggle however the ball passed over the line. Continuing their opponents and two serious raids were made on the Scotchmen uprights. Avery was tackled and passed to the right wing where a little fine passing play took place between J Duckworth and Douglas. Duckworth ultimately centred and a fine struggle ensued in front of the goal. Duckworth rushed up a second time and placed the sphere between the uprights. Off side was claimed and allowed. A throw in next gave the Rovers an advantage and the visitors had for a time to act on the defensive. Avery and J Hargreaves pressed severely whilst J Duckworth and Douglas on the other wing caused great trouble. A couple of throws in bothered the Scotchmen but a miss kick by Sharples in front of the goal relieved them considerably. Smith had now as throw in and he sent it well among the layers and finally Struthers passed it through the Rovers posts. Now the visitors had the advantage and keeping up the pressure they once again assailed the home citadel. A corner kick seriously menaced the visitor’s goal and a hard struggle ensured in which Tom Vallance succeeded in getting the leather away. At half time the game stood – Rangers three goals, Rovers two. On the resumption of hostilities the scene of action for a short time was of a give and take character, each goal being alternately assailed. Two excellent tries were made by the Rovers, but both proved failures. Ker and Tom Vallance came in for considerable applause for their prowess whilst McIntyre and Suter on behalf of the Rovers were also loudly cheered. The ball was twice put up in the Rovers citadel but the shots by Ker being wide of the mark the leather passed out of play. This pressure was quickly returned and a corner kick gave the home club a very slight advantage. The ball was repelled and Douglas received it and made a short run and with a powerful shot he cleverly placed it between the Scotch goal. This was a fine piece of play and Douglas was loudly cheered. The game now being level the Rovers pressed well and seriously menaced the visitor’s uprights on more than one occasion. One or two throws in and a corner kick menaced the visitor’s posts and it was only by the means of the good defensive play of the backs that the danger was averted. A shot by Douglas all but succeeded in reducing the visitor’s fortress. A few minutes before time was called the Scotsmen had a throw in, in close proximity to the Rovers goal and out of the scrimmage which ensued Smith rushed u and placed the ball between the home uprights for the forth time. Another try was now made to fetch down the Scotch colours but Douglas again shot over the bar. In the last three minutes the Rovers made a magnificent rush on the Rangers castle where they managed to secure a throw in. The Blackburn captain sent the leather well among the players but striking the top bar the ball rebounded. Jefferson administered a timely kick and the score stood at four goals each. Not a moment was to be lost and the Rovers forwards pounced on the ball and Douglas made a heavy shot. The leather bounced off the keeper chest and Avery rushed up and notched the fifth goal in brilliant style. Time was now called and the home club retired from the field with another well-earned victory
