Match Trivia
A friendly match between the above named teams was played at Perry Barr. The prospect of a good game drew together about four thousand persons. The Villa played their cup team with the exception of Dawson, whose position at halfback was taken by Devey. The Rangers brought down a strong eleven, being aided by players from the Queen’s Park and Renton club. The Aston Villa played up hill, with the wind in their favour, and at once attacked. Some good passing between Brown and Green enabled the former to shoot, but Smellie stopped the ball from going through. The Rangers raced down the field, but they were checked by Cox, and the Villa forwards again carried the fight into their opponents’ quarters, where Hunter, getting a good opportunity scored. After the midfield kick the Rangers pressed, and Gourlay tried a shot which Warner handed out, giving a corner, which was not utilised. Allen became conspicuous for a fine individual run, but when near goal he dribbled too widely, and Nicol running out kicked the ball away. The game now became of a most one-sided character, the Villa pressing continuously. McFarlane and Smellie for a time kept them at bay, but it was plain to all that sooner or later the Villa must score, and so it proved for Hunter, receiving the ball from Burton, scored a second goal for his side. Campbell then made a splendid run down the centre of the field, but nearing goal Cox tackled and took the ball from him. After several unsuccessful attempts to score, hunter passed the ball to Allen, who beat Nicol for the third time with a low swift shot. The Rangers played up desperately to score, and at length were rewarded with success, for Buchanan touched the ball under the goal bar, Yates scooping it out when too late. Halftime found the game unchanged. During the second half the Villa again had the best of the play. Their combination was far and away better than that of their opponents, whose goal was kept in a state of siege. The defence offered to the attacks was first class, Smellie kicking and tackling particularly well. For twenty minutes the Villa were kept from scoring, but then Green made one of his characteristic rushes and carried the ball through the Rangers goal. Some determined play on the part of the Rangers ensured, and Warner had several difficult shots to stop, but playing with consummate coolness he preserved his goal inviolate. Just before time Brown scored a fifth goal for the Villa, who thus won the match by 5 goals to one
