Match Trivia

I thought I was to congratulate Aberdeen on being the first to lower the Rangers colours. As it was, the Pittodrie side deserve congratulations for their well-deserved draw. This will give some idea how near it was for Rangers losing their unbeaten certificate. Just before the interval Fisher snapped up a chance, and had Robb beaten. This lead the home team maintained until five minutes from the finish, when the equalising goal was obtained in rather a remarkable manner. Morton lobbed over a ball, which would have dropped about the penalty spot. Anderson rushed out and punched but did not send the ball very far. Cunningham fastened on and lifted the ball over a crowd of heads towards the goal. The ball, however, struck the upright and rebounded against Forsyth, who was following up and went into the net. The game was strenuously contested, and greatly enjoyed by 22,000 spectators. Rangers, who tried the experiment of Meiklejohn at left-back were more convincing at the commencement. Hannah and Forsyth, however, early tumbled to the moves of the Ibrox forwards, and both were early prominent with fine clearances. Following fine movements by Rangers’ right Cunningham parted with perfect precision to Cairns, but Tommy just failed to get the better of Anderson. It took Aberdeen some little time to find their feet, but once they did, they rattled into Manderson and Co, in a manner not to their liking. Dixon and Meiklejohn once got mixed up, but danger was averted. Several corners fell to the Aberdeen, and from one of these a perfect bombardment took place in front of Robb. The ball bobbed from head-to-head, and more than once looked like finding the net. Aberdeen were now rampant, and their next visit to Robb saw the latter well beaten by Fisher. After the interval the Rangers redoubled their effort but found themselves up against a defence which was not in the mood for giving anything away. Rangers’ forwards played too close, and often pretty movements, which looked like counting came to nought through over elaboration. Aberdeen did not believe in pattern weaving; their idea was the quickest way to goal and shoot. Often in this they were almost successful. Robb had more to do than Anderson, although neither was overworked. Aberdeen’s defence was top-hole. Forsyth and Hannah made no mistakes, and their understanding was almost perfect. Aberdeen’s half-backs played a fine spoiling game which had not a little to do with the sting being taken out of Rangers’ attack. Middleton and Thomson formed the best wing on the field, and most danger came from this pair. Fisher distrusted play nicely, and his goal was smartly taken. When Rankine cut one his fancy touches he paid, and his leading-out work was fine. He should come on a bit. Robb had several clever saves, one in particular from Fisher. Manderson was the better Rangers back. Meiklejohn was inclined to waver when hard pressed. Bowie was conspicuous throughout, and it was due to his clever work that Archibald and Muirhead were so often prominent. Archibald however was somewhat erratic and wasted several good balls. Cunningham, although well looked after, showed good judgment when the equaliser was secured. Cairns and Morton started well but faded out in the second half.
